DPF’s are giving us all sorts of problems with are work vehicles. We have some Rangers and Hilux, as well as some Vauxhall vans. They are always trying to do a regen. The fleet of old Land Rovers we have are actually the most reliable.

Most councils don’t allow any pickups, vans, crewcabs or land rovers now. As they All privatise all their waste disposal contracts to cut costs, you can only expect it to spread further.
Rangers or the Mazda equivalent are generally the best of the bunch once you get into the 2000s. Just make sure it’s done more than 140k then it’ll have a new head. Personally I wouldnt go near a Nevara or an l200. The izuzus arent too bad but are much harder to source parts for.

This is just my 2 cents. I have done many KM's in a Hilux 4WD. Some mentioned here that they are uncomfortable, although the are not the most comfortable, I never had a massive issue with them. The non turbo drove me insane. To slow, under powered.
I also had a Dmax and Rodeo. They were by far the best on fuel, they were comfortable and fairly fast. However I found them very noisy.
I didn't like the L200. I can't really pint out why, it just never became my car. I had a few Mitsubishi's but never fell in love with them.
Ford Ranger, my brother had one, abused it for 7 years before it died. I thought they were extremely boring but went okay.
My pick? The Dmax

My recommendation. Very reliable, don't rust and good spares availability. Can carry a few logs too.

My local council tips (Surrey) have started charging for anything brought in in a van or pick-up as commercial waste, regardless of whether the van/pick-up is your works truck or personal daily driver. If it is registered to you personally you can pay for a permit which entitles you to 12 free visits per year, but that's it. They let me in when I take my VW T4, but only as it has a pop top, rear windows and seats in the back which fold into a bed and I successfully argued that it was a 'camper', not a van.
I'm also in the middle of a building project so was considering the same sort of pick-up (and budget) for lugging materials around as I hate having the interior of the T4 full of cement and brick dust!
Might just be cheaper and easier to buy a decent heavy duty trailer and flog it again when the building work is finished.

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

I'm assuming you need a crew-cab / double-cab and it's a £4K budget? Others to consider; Nissan Navara Isuzu TF Isuzu Rodeo
But you'd have a way to go to beat the Hilux in terms of reliability & longevity.
A mate of mine had an L200 and had no end of very expensive trouble with it.

Regardless of the tip thing, I have spent many miles behind the wheel of my Father-in-Law's pick-ups. The early Navara was a hideous thing to drive, rubbish on fuel and a generally unpleasant place to be. The later Navaras were a much more comfortable place to be. They eat up miles and are generally reliable. HOWEVER there was a point where chassis were corroding badly and in some cases making them dangerous (sometimes snapping as stated). The majority with problems will have either been bought back by Nissan or scrapped, so there should be good ones out there. They tow like there's nothing on the back, although they do like a bit of a drink when there's a big trailer attached (shocker). They do however have the turning circle of an oil tanker though. Personally my favourite to drive was the huge 3.2 litre Ford Ranger but you won't get one for your budget. What about a Yank? Would you be allowed? Given your list, I'd go the D-Max route. Had this in Malaysia and used to do the 1,500km KL to Bangkok run regularly with no problems. Go for manual as the diesel/auto combination wasn't a marriage made in heave.

Hmm. I have never had a problem at the tip in my pick up. But it is knocking on 30 years old, no builder around here would be seen dead in anything older than 3....

Ranger/Mazda B2500(might even find a BT50 for under £4k) or the Isuzu Rodeo/DMAX. Think open mind and buy on condition,with anything commercial there are some right stinkers out there, particularly as it gets into your price bracket.
Once looked at a 3.0 Hilux myself and for the £9k asking price the scabby sills and surface rust throughout the chassis was hugely off putting.

Any tip within a 30 mile radius of me at least would stop a pick-up at entry and turn it away without a permit, same with a van. I get away with it in my Shogun Commercial though as everyone just assumes it’s a normal Shogun, which it is really, it just doesn’t have any back seats.
From that list though, Ford Ranger every time. £4000 would buy a decent one. It’s the best drive by far out of those and very reliable and robust.

Permits required for vans and Pick ups in North Wales, but you must prove it's privately registered to you, then you will be issued with a number of vouchers, cant't remember if it's 8 or 10, 1 voucher to be surrendered at each visit. Number plates are also checked.

We have some L200's at work and frankly why anyone would use one if they didn't need it for a farm I can't fathom. Awful ride, curse word seats and poor fuel mileage. Unless you do hardcore off roading a decent van will get you into the woods.
