Hello
Just looking for some advice.. I'm keen to import some USA spec quad lamps to convert my Volvo 240 but I'm curious as to if anyone has had problems with the beam direction switching from left to right hand drive?
Many thanks

Many thanks US DOT headlights conform with the UK beam pattern and are totally acceptable at MOT. So no, there is no issue unless specific LHD lamps have been fitted.

There are RHD lamps that fit in the same housings, you want to look for Scirrocco or Audi 80 units.
The USA spec ones are originally sealed beam, which are whack for light output. The above are H4 lamp fitment.

I found a thread somewhere about rhd converting a Camaro that had Hella part numbers. Criss referenced those to find the models but this was several years ago, so I'm a bit rusty... OP - Bearing in mind almost all 70s/80s American cars used the same 6x4 sealed beam lamps, the market is pretty big. They're still available new although I managed to pick up good second hand ones. UK scirocco had vehicle specific lights. Only the Audi used the lamps you are thinking of. The Ford Probe used the H4 versions of the lamps used in the Volvo front end.

US law only allowed a few specific lamps, hence all cars seemingly using the same lamps. All sealed beam, they didn't allow halogen for decades. You can still buy those brand new lamps in Walmart, Autozone, etc. Lamps of that period also had to direct a percentage of light upwards to illuminate freeway overhead signs - which were of the same standard as our signs using reflective studs that we took down at the beginning of WW2. So you can imagine how good they are in fog or falling snow! . . from the outside you can see the vertical beam in falling snow. Modern lamps don't - and as has been said, have a flat beam, so pass our IVA (on an imported Yank) and MOT.
