All done on government website. Swapped my sons to his new car in about 10 minutes. Its really easy as it guides you through it.

If you don’t have the new car yet pop it on retention. £80 and you get a certificate that’s now lasts 10yrs When new car arrives back on line and transfer if onto new ride. Simples.

As mentioned, generally easy to do online. There's a few cases where it can't be done online, but if so it will inform you of that when you try.
DO NOT be tempted to do it by post at the moment if you can avoid it, there is currently a ~3 month backlog of post at the DVLA due to coronavirus, online is still working though.

we bought another car for her
we got the logbook back in her name yesterday for her new car, and have tried the online service via dvla gov.uk website, we have taken off her personal reg from her old car and have the retention code.
but upon assigning it to the new one, the process just ends with
"This registration number cannot be assigned
Transaction ID "IDNUMBERHERE"
Our records show this registration number cannot be put on this vehicle."
Initially I thought that maybe we are trying to do too much all at once, and it needs time to process, I have checked the dvla site and her old reg is now assigned to her old car so I can go ahead and put that original plate on when she gets home from work.
So have tried again this morning to assign her personal reg to her new car, same message.
Somewhere on the site it said the car had to be either taxed or sorned, it was neither, so I have sorned it, and tried again - still no luck.
Will try again this afternoon

so although we have a retention code we don't have a certificate, so maybe once that is issued that is when we can make the reassign.

I wonder if the removal from the previous car hasn’t been fully processed yet so it’s in a no man’s land for the interim.
I assume the reg isn’t newer than the donor car as that’s against the rules due to the potential of making a car look newer than it actually is.

Assuming you're not trying to put the reg on a Q plate or a car older than the reg you are trying to assign, then are you in compliance with the rules for the new car having been taxed/SORNed for the appropriate period of time? www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assignIn particular in your case the car must: - be of a type that needs an MOT test certificate - have been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years - be taxed currently (or have a SORN in place - if it’s had a SORN for more than 5 years, it must be taxed)

I had that on my modern car , was due to the fact the car has not been taxed for a period of time at some point in the last few years ( probably whilst for sale and in trade) Had to complete the form and send it to the DVLA

There seems to be some lag in the systems - transferred a reg off the wife’s car (ready to sell) and not showing as the old reg everywhere yet. Annoying as waiting for the finance to realise I’ve just paid them off so I can sell the sodding thing!

well nothing at the moment, car checking websites are still showing as the MG ZR but with no mot data available
dvla is showing the reg to be on her peugeot
so just waiting for systems to catch up, insurance wise really cos at the moment after putting reg in and then "find car" is still showing MG. I can see that if she has to ring it will be fun and games with them as the car has changed but not the reg

I can see that if she has to ring it will be fun and games with them as the car has changed but not the reg pita The reg can take a while to update on systems any way after a recent swap over - Instead of using the reg you can just use the "manually find vehicle" option and select manufacturer and model instead of using the reg number and should be an option to manually put reg number in later on. There's always ways around using the reg - it's like when you import a car you have to insure it using the chassis code because the reg isn't assigned until it's UK registered / MOT'd / Taxed and you need to insure it in advance to go through that process.

Just be patient. It does take a day or two to catch up as it were. It will all come good. When I bought another new reg no for my Audi it took a few days and that was off the retention certificate. I have around 6 personnel reg nos and I must say it has never been easier to transfer from vehicle to vehicle as it is now. I remember having to go to local dvka offices to change them over.

I remember having to go to local dvka offices to change them over. I think thats what we did around 8 years ago when she got her ZR, there used to be a DVLA office near manchster Old Trafford cricket ground, we just did the whole thing there with a real person, we did the same when she originally bought her plate too. it just frustrating more than anything, she wants to get motoring but cant insure it because the car isnt showing on their system, we could insure on the old reg, but then when swapped it would be a further admin fee! right, unless somebody wants to pay our car tax etc, here are the reg's her personal plate is R66SMJ, this was on her ZR and the retention of it happened within a day, all good and her ZR is back on its old plates and now sold. her new car is a silver pug 308, original reg ML08BRF which is still showing as that on some databases I use totalcarcheck, putting in her personal reg on that shows R66 as an MG ZR, but silver, diesel and 1560cc with £125 tax, only half that info is right! ZR was red, 1400cc petrol, £205 tax we are hoping its done monday, mainly because last night my own car threw its spring mount off the front strut! so today its got no struts on awaiting new ones, cant remember the last time we had no operating vehicles!

we can certainly buy insurance for the pugs old reg plate, but when it changes we will have to pay even more out on an administration fee, so we would rather do the whole lot in one go.

she has had the V5C back today but according to insurance websites its still relating to the ZR
Mrs is getting annoyed, I just say this is why I don't have a personal reg! too much mither when changing cars, although to be fair we tend to keep them for a few years so its not something we do monthly or yearly like some others do.
