I have an immense yearning for a Toyota FJ Cruiser at the moment, apologies if it’s contravening the “Retro” vibe but I feel this should be an honorary retro! I love the retro look and comparative simplicity to other modern true 4x4’s. I am especially drawn to the whacky unique styling that takes cues from its early ancestor the FJ40. I went to have a view and test drive in one today with a view of potentially purchasing one soon, I immediately fell in love with it, perhaps with my heart not my head but we have all done this haven’t we? I need to do a lot more research such as parts and support but ideally wanted views from others who may have owned one, knows someone who has owned one or even just been in one? Ideally I was hoping for a UK club/forum but I suspect with so few numbers in the UK at the moment this is a tall ask. In the meantime old and new.

I love these things. I feel like they would be fairly hefty on a UK road, I've drove one in the states for a few days a few years back and it felt big even there.
Would definitely like one though.

Some people love them more than a bit. My friend Andy swears by them as moderns, but he is an old car guy. Pretend Sakura. RETRO ENOUGH ? Love this. And thats a wrap.

A guy I know through work has one. It's ace, does serious miles and apart from service and normal wear and tear items it's needed nothing. Fuel consumption is pretty bad, is about the only downside he could think of.

They're very popular here, but so's the Fortuner, so it tells us nothing! Must admit, one trundled past the other day with a non-stock exhaust and it sounded sweet.

We currently have a LWB Shogun as a family hauler but I've often looked at these, I don't suppose fuels costs would be much different given that petrol is cheaper. I did wonder about rear passenger visibility though, I think it could be a bit gloomy in the back for the kids given the wide rear pillar and relatively small rear window. They are really cool though.

We have one in the family. It's heavy on fuel (only v6 automatic in Australia) it's cramped in the back. Buuut it is super cool and drives great. The one we have in the family runs 33" tyres and is lifted a bit, has a chip and bigger exhaust. It sounds great and goes like a rocket. Yes, you should get one

Love the looks of these, but keep baulking at the 4.0 V6 as overlanding would feature in my ultimate 4wd vision and as stylish as they are i can't imagine the range would be enough even with various auxiliary tanks and additional fuel carried. Shame really as they are simply cool to look at.

It can can go as low as 5 KM per liter but normal highway driving he gets about 9.5 KM per liter. He average normal driving about 7 KM per liter

Just to add for future reference. They both have Yellow ones, and love them. It was mate Andy in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s best friends 71st birthday yesterday. So he took her on a little road trip to Kansas on back roads through Osage county. Loads of oil it seems, belonging to the Osage Tribe. He sent a pic of the FJ next to the road, with an oil derrick in the background. Wish I was there.

Well I took the plunge and put a deposit on one which I have to say drives superbly. 😎
Two general questions now and views welcomed:
1. As this is a Japanese import it has little winter protection underneath. With this in mind I contacted a recommended company called South West Rustproofing prior to looking at FJ’s to budget for a decent treatment. The car would be with them for around 3 days and receive a vast amount of work totalling around £900. After viewing the car, it is absolutely spotless underneath and although will need treatment my dilemma is should I fork out the hefty sum of £900 when the work done is similar to rusty Land Rovers which I believe would not require the same level of work. As they are in demand which I assume says a lot about their firm the earliest I can book is January 2021. With that in mind I would be tempted to Waxoil it in the interim anyway. Should I have this work done or can you recommend a DIY kit that due to the condition underneath would suffice?
2. The car has an awesome Japanese Sat Nav and touch screen sound system!! Clearly a UK system is required, any recommendations which are compatible with steering buttons and reversing camera would also be appreciated?
Cheers, looking forward to my fuel Nectar points!

Good news. Congratulations;and screw the consumption. Honestly, it is not wh you buy a car like that or walk away from one. I would call the rustproofers and chat to them, ask their opinion on the interim option of Waxoyl and potential interaction with their products as used. Keep in mind that this car is X years old, so 5 months will make little difference.. If you plan to keep it for 5 years, then look at it as $200/year for your mental peace of mind. Ohhh, and if you use Waxoyl from a pressure pump, use a mask or respirator DAMHIK

Oddly , i saw my first one of these "in the wild" today , a black beauty. Only caught a fairly quick glimpse but it looked rather under-wheeled , nice all the same though.

Bit too much Jurassic park for me. Weird ,but the Ford Explorer used in Jurassic Park doesn’t give me the same feeling . Totally underwhelming ,but probably only because I drove proper Fj’s. Sequels are never good...

Well and truly happy with it and has that retro feel that I longed for and my daughter loves it! Ordered a UK head unit & multiple converter leads and is booked in for early next year for the underside treatment.

Congrats on getting one, I’m jealous! Can you tell me if the rear is a bit claustrophobic, with the limited windows? I would have one but the potential for moaning kids is putting me off. Also, I hate the term but how is the “real world” mpg?
