Like a lot of people my usual holiday location is not available this year (static caravan in North Wales, how exotic 😂) due to you know what!!! So I've been looking at smaller 2-3 birth caravans but a suitable (frugle) vehicle would be needed. Was thinking Disco 2 but running costs would be ridiculous! What's thoughts on a diesel estate for towing? Thinking Mk1 Focus estate?? Any thoughts, help appreciated.

Doesn’t have to be diesel you know..
Previous tow cars for me: BMW E28 525e VW Bora PD100 Citroen ZX 1.8 Auto Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Vauxhall Frontera 2.2DTi
Only 2 I’ve made note of mpg figures are the Jeep (20mpg irrespective of towing or not) and the Fronty which seems to do 35mpg solo and about 27mpg towing : both of these running in 2WD mode virtually all the time though.
Bigger the tow car, the easier towing is though.

My disco 1 towing our first small caravan. That was a 4 berth if you were brave enough to use the hammock, but realistically a comfy 3 berth. Just got a bit tired of moving it around, it was just too big (and it really wasn’t big) so we got a Romini and I tow that now with a 4 litre Jeep XJ. Total overkill, the caravan weighs 300kg. It’s the aero that upsets the MPG as the Romini is super square. Cool though. This isn’t mine, but visually identical except wheel trims, I re-striped ours last year. Ours is a really early Model with upgraded 13” wheels. 😂

Looks like a porta-crapper on wheels!🤣 is it long enough to lie down in , or do you have to sleep standing up?

Looks like a porta-crapper on wheels!🤣 is it long enough to lie down in , or do you have to sleep standing up? It does have a ‘hilariously’ similar appearance to a portaloo. You don’t sleep along it, the bed is across the front. It’s basically the same inside as a Roma-home (same company, spot the name) but the bed in a Roma-home is lengthways. It’s very clever for storage, even has a full length wardrobe that drops down behind the sink unit. It’s brilliant. Despite not being blue or green with a white roof.

No....just regular. It just looks so dinky!! To be fair it's bigger than it looks. I'm trying to find some pics but I am struggling due to the rarity of these things. If I remember i'll take some this weekend, I'm off using it in the New Forest. No worse off with this than a tent other than you aren't on the floor and you aren't cold, wet or covered in bugs.

I used to tow a 4 berth 80's ace with a 1.6 mk4 astra convertible with no problems, used a vector 1.9dti and a Citroën picaso 2.0 diesel before that, all 35+mpg round town and 50ish mpg motorway.

I got 14 mpg out of my Falcon towing a double horse box. I'd expect similar or worse towing a big caravan.

Used to use a Lancia integrale - look in the mirror at high speed and think some t t in a white van was tail-gating . . .
Still use it for towing car transporter trailers.

Are you after a small caravan cause you don’t have your B+E ?

I think people often think you need something big to tow a caravan, but depending on the size, it’s amazing what you can use! I quite often tow our folding one + roof box + 5 people in the car no problems with our daily 1.6tdci Fusion... Back in the day a 1.6 petrol Cortina would have been a pretty common tow car (with much less torque)..

Where did you get those wheels IV got a folding camper and think they would look amazing on mine Also I now have a diesel CRV (3rd generation) should be an extremely capable tow car

They were off fb marketplace...I think the guy I got them from said they came off a car transporter trailer. I’d been looking for a while, but all the Wellers I came across the chrome was rusty and they were Ford 4x108 fitment, so would have needed adapters. These were 4x100 (which is what most caravans seem to be), so I figured I’d spend the cash I would have needed on adapters on getting them powder coated in chrome effect instead they were white originally:
