OK, so the insurance for the 104 has done it's thang and paid out.
Plan A was to buy another 104 coupe which would likely have had to be from France. Plan A also involved getting a temporary load lugger and tow car to help with this and smoke around like a granddad for a while in a big ol' barge. Plan A also involved spending money on the barge, the tax and insurance it would demand, all the fuel it would guzzle, probably repairs AND a pile o cash getting somewhere in Europe with a trailer and back, although that at least would have been an adventure.
Plan B is to drop all the money plus some more on a 205GTi. OK, so its not a 104 but it IS a 205GTi and likely my last chance to own one before prices vanish into the stratosphere. I can't believe I haven't even driven one before. Even if I ultimately decide I'm done with 205's after a while it shouldn't loose me any money and Plan A can resurrect itself in a few years.
So, that said, what should I look for in a 205GTi? I'm not going to get near a minter so any car is going to be a bit shabby, but the choice seems to be between a shabby standard car and a modified track/fun car. There seems to be better value in those as a) more fun and b) collectors don't want them.
The two options seem personified by these:
