I'm not sure my carb is any good, so I don't have many options, to find out if it is. Single port, 30Pict 2
1) buy a new copy carb on Amazon/Ebay for £60 £1 Mine is a 30 pict 2 (made in Germany)
2)post my carb to someone to try on their well running aircooled engine, to confirm it runs well, or not.
Carbs have always been a "black art" to me.
Whats the deal with the cheap carbs on ebay, are they OK? (Better than a 50/60 year old carb)
Do you have a well behaved Aircooled engine, that will take my carb that you can be bothered trying my carb on.
Cheers Nelson

I’ve got a 30 pict something that was fitted to our 1300, that was then swapped to Webers and then a 2ltr It was a new remanufactured one from machine7 in 2018, and has done 500 or so miles. But we had issues with our carb (and another spare on a 1200 engine we had was no better) and bolting this on fixed the issues. The Fug isn’t exactly a milecruncher so longevity wasn’t a huge issue when I got it, but it seems fine and works I can’t check your carb, but you are welcome to try this one.... only issue is I’m down Buckingham, Do you travel down this way. Could maybe meet on motorway if it’s any use (And do a covid throw or something )

Wont idle, you can see what I have done on the last few posts of my Covin build.
Ran great in 2017, and had maybe 5x 2mins starts since, now even with adjustments, it dies under 1500(ish) RPM. Its a 1500, and I timed it off a Youtube video...but last night I was reading, only the US versions time to 0TDC, and mine should be 7deg BTDC, so will re-time it tonight.
I have electronic ignition coming for it to limit "points" problems,
Cleaned the heat risers yesterday, and reinstalled the Carb...ran perfect for 20mins. on the next start, it would not idle again under 1500RPM ish.
Thanks for taking an interest, these Aircooled engine's, seems to be an artform to get them running right.

I used this guide for timing mine . www.vw-resource.com/timing_discussion.htmlRecommend’s timing at 30 degrees at full advance , engine needs to be at 3k rpm . I have to check mine down the industrial estate as the neighbours don’t appreciate the noise .

Ive had a quick look and see it didn't run too bad in 2017. Have you made any changes to the engine since? have you also gone through the rest of the ignition system and ruled that out? i've had problems before which you think is the carb but turns out its something electrical. If it's using alot of fuel what do the plugs look like? Could be worth taking a look at the choke if it's using alot of fuel. www.vw-resource.com/automatic_choke.html

When Retiming the engine tonight....this does not look right, the lower plate the points screw to is loose, and rubbing against the distributor shaft. I can recenter it with my finger, but due to the points pressure spring, it sits lop sided. how is this part held...is it broken, or uncliped/screwed? Or should I just get a new Chinese dizzy?

Ordered a Cheap Ebay "powerspark" Dizzy, should be better than this one. Then will try the carb again and see if I still have problems

Good you got it running i had to get a mate to swap a dizzy last week on a 1600 camper and got a powerspark one fitted with electronic ignition but went for the SVDA not the 009 and after it was set back up it runs way better now but i have to agree the carb is a pain to set but a few guides can help very much, getting them hot and revving them is all part of it.
