I apologise as it's modern content. I'm looking for a replacement for our 2004 Grand Scenic 1.5dci. The wife wants a T4/T5 Caravelle but they're out of my £5k budget and seem over priced for what you get. It will need to be a 7/8 seater, something reliable and economical will be a bonus. Definitely want to know what cars & engines I need to avoid!
Thanks

Sharan, Alhambra (shared platform with Galaxy, made in bespoke built factory in Portugal under VW control) as they made these facelift (Mk1 phase 2 or Mk2 depending on who you talk to) from about 2001 to 2010. 1.9 PD lump in 115-130 hp flavour, also avialable in petrol vw 2.0 (avoid too thirsty and underpowered) 1.8 Turbo 150hp and thirsty, or ford 2.3 -massive tax bracket due to emissions and thirsty. Avoid earlier autos as they used the JATCO 5 speed and it was wibblepoo. (DSG is ok if available? but MUST have service record) Just outed my 2006 Galaxy in 150hp TDi PD form , last of the VW shared platform WGR models. 6 speed manuals are good but listen for whine on overrun. Sometimes some electrical units play up such as lock motors but if you get a cherished one they are great load luggers. S-max have less last row headroom than Galaxy version and cost more but are a 'sportier' drive (its relative really), I know because i've just bought a Galaxy WA6 for lugging grand kids around and youngest would feel a little restricted in the rear of S-Max but she's big for her age! Diesels on these are PSA/Ford joint project so essentially 16v HDI lumps in 2.0 and 2.2 form , the 1.8 is a ford lump. You need to ensure all electrics work as they had some battery issues on earlier models. Powershift can be fine on diesels as it is wet clutch but MUST have fluid changes every 30K. Zafira touring are well spec'd but the third row is occasional and small kids only. You obviously know the French flavour and they can be had for good money for late cars but I never buy big French due to a bad experience previously. You could go Japanese but most that are not moon shot mileage or rotten are imports. Italian ones are poorly built, trim will self destruct on touching it and some injector issues are common on JTD's KIA are on a truck chassis and drive like it, parts can be pricey Chrysler are....... well I wouldn't buy one but I'm sure you don't care It's sad I have found all this out I know, but I do have other cars that are for driving not just for a task. HTH

Mercedes GL class or a Mercedes R class Either one is a lot of car for the money And both have decent 3rd row seats that are suitable for adults

I would love a Honda Freed, but I couldn't be arsed with the hassle of insuring something you'd have to ring up for quotes on.
Lots of Japanese curios out there, but the Freed is cool and different

VW Touran? Efficient diesel engines available. 7 seats, 3 in middle row, two in back that fold into boot floor. Middle 3 seats can all be removed individually which turns it into a useable van.

We have an inherited 2.2 D Toyota Corolla Verso which is pretty dull but gets 50MPG and has never missed a beat currently sat at 110K. 2.2 d engine has a chain not a belt and it pulls like a train and as its big you don't need to thrash it to make progress. Rear seats are small people only. If you want to go big then the ford / vauxhall crew cab / minibus things are meant to drive better than a T4 but these are all big things to park compared to a senic and I don't know about reliability. As a 7 seater the volvo XC 90 options are meant to be safe as houses but lots to go wrong. www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ is a good reference. Good luck ! James

Thank you for all your replies. Some cars I hadn't thought of, I'll also have a look at some of the Japanese imports.

Australian Ford Falcon wagon. An aftermarket third row seat is available for all models from, I think, XD onwards making 8-9 seats depending on the front seat configuration. The third row seat is really only suitable for children as head and leg room are somewhat limited. Expect fuel consumption (mpg) in the mid to high 20s. I got close to 29mpg from this EAII (3.9 litre six and 4 speed automatic) on a long trip six up with a lot of luggage.

We have an inherited 2.2 D Toyota Corolla Verso which is pretty dull but gets 50MPG and has never missed a beat currently sat at 110K. My brother and sister both have a roughly 15-year old petrol Carina Verso, they're slightly bigger than the Corolla Verso. Apart from yellowing headlights, something of which many "modern" cars seem to suffer, both have never had any issues. The Carina Verso is as dull as the Corolla though...
I regularly see a gen 2 Toyota Previa, which I believe is built on the same platform. It looks pretty funky (had yellow headlights though...), but not as cool as the gen 1.

After all your suggestions I ended up with a 2001 T4 Caravelle! Needs some work but was under budget.

Sounds good.... mechanicals are ok, just bodywork to keep on top off.
Had many 7 seaters , previa was daft comfy but drank like a fish. Grand voyager had a chocolate gearbox Mk 2 galaxy was good but basic Now got mk3 galaxy and that’s ok but starting to go crispy in places (traditional Henry Ford stuff)
