I knew that the old Pontiac had some areas of fairly heavy surface rust on the inner shell, but as I’ve stripped more interior out I’ve found it’s more widespread. Until I can strip it down properly and clean/paint the shell, I’m going to remove the worst and coat with a rust converter.
My question is, what’s the best converter that you can buy in decent quantities without bankrupting yourself? Last one I used (years ago) was Kurust, but I know the market’s expanded a big since then.

A prolific contributor on here swore by Bilt-Hamber Hydrate 80 and had been using it on cars for quite a few years. I've started using it, but only recently so I can't say how well it lasts. There's still a need to get rid of as much rust as you can - I don't think any of them penetrate very far. Best way, of course, is either blast back to clean metal, or cut out the rust and replace it with new metal.

Hydrate 80. Used to use Jenolite before that, but Hydrate 80 is a different level to anything else available.
Can do you a litre for £30 posted if that's any good to you.

I buy 30% phosphoric acid and dip if I can. It removes rust completely. For larger stuff I use a spray bottle and mist it on. 5 litres is about £20 or so. Then epoxy prime. Job done.

And this is a temporary measure to avoid any further damage - remove the worst of the rust and convert it, then tackle it more thoroughly when work starts in earnest.

Hydrate 80 and vactan are both latex based products that bond to the rust and seal it from moisture, you have to get it back to a pretty sound surface because if any flakes off you lose the seal. and let the moisture / oxygen in. I've used hydrate 80 recently but as above only time will tell how long it will last, I have a worry in the back of my mind that rust could spread under it like it can do with powder coat. The other option is something like deox gel which actually removes the rust, splodge it on cover with cling film and leave for a day or 2 then wash it off and you should have rust free metal to prime and paint.

Before I use hydrate 80 I will always mechanically remove as much corrosion as possible. Then a treatment or two of Bilt Hamber Deox gel to get to the areas I couldn't get to mechanically.
I would never just use hydrate 80 without some pretreatment of the corrosion.

The hydrate 80 is oxilaic acid based too so it does a bit more than encapsulate the rust.
Por15 metal ready works for me too. I'm not sure exactly what's in it other than phosphoric acid but it makes a good 'post blast' treatment.. that said Frost sell a dedicated after blast spray too I think. I'd bet it's the same stuff dyed a different colour. As mentioned earlier it's all phosphoric acid based anyway so you can just buy it as that.
*Edit* yeh just checked the msds and the por15 stuff (they call it metal prep now apparently) is 8.5% phosphoric acid and 4.5% zinc phosphate. Not hard to make your own..
