There used to be a Saab specialists very near to where I grew up in Walsall and regularly saw rally liveried up versions of those early 70s saabs.
I think the owner of the garage lived on the same street as after the yard turned into wasteland and then new build houses there was still a pair of saabs living near the White Lion pub in Highgate up until the late 00s. Not sure if they sold off their last pair, moved house, or other reasons.

You probably mean Highgate Saab, they closed down around 2007 I think. ivangt6 , I don't know much about two stroke Saabs (top pic), but the V4 in the lower pic won't be worth anything near 3K. The two strokes are getting a bit pricey I think, but V4s are still very affordable fortunately. Any V4 questions hit me up.

When it comes to SAAB's of this era, the two stroke is the one for me. Think it was the only two stroke car that won a rally? The ford V4 is an utterly curse word engine though - I think it was @hotwire who has a lot of experience with the V4, none of it good. B204 transplant but that's a lot of work .... For me though, the good stuff starts with the 99

From my own experience - I hope to know a bit more about them in the future as I know that everyone else who has had them liked them a lot. Didn't mean to offend - I just think the one that is in saabs isn't on the same level as a corsair/transit etc....

To be totally honest, I'm not a fan of the V4 either. I had a Mk1 Transit I had bought without an engine, and I put a Consul GT V4 engine in it. It ran OK ( at top speed it would outrun the then new 2 litre square nose facelift Transit ), but it was rough enough to shake the exhaust pipes off the engine. ( they'd just drop down on the front axle, so that wouldnt get you stranded... ) Still, as a vehicle it was much better than the Alfa Romeo F12 van it replaced. Which was a great engine in a terrible van... And you cant argue with the cool looks of a race prepped Saab with twin Webers on a cross over intake...

From my own experience - I hope to know a bit more about them in the future as I know that everyone else who has had them liked them a lot. Curious to hear more about your experience, always happy to talk Cologne V4 anyway! I'm probably the most active used Cologne V4 engine parts importer in the UK, so I think I have a pretty good picture of their weak spots. Didn't mean to offend - I just think the one that is in saabs isn't on the same level as a corsair/transit etc.... No offense taken, I should've added a It's funny, many argue the Cologne V4 is the better of the two. I have no experience with Essex V4s, so can't say anything about it. What I do know though from 15 years of breaking, building and driving Cologne V4s, is that they are very tunable and driveable engines. However, they're pretty curse word with a a clapped out carb, a rotten exhaust, a clogged PCV valve and badly adjusted points ignition. Pretty much like any other poorly maintained engine... They have a very successful race and rally heritage too, not sure if Essex V4s have ever been successfully raced?

I had a Mk1 Transit I had bought without an engine, and I put a Consul GT V4 engine in it. That's an Essex V4, which is a completely different engine.

Thanks for the correction melle . That explains it... I thought the Dutch built Transits had the German engines, but its a long time ago so I could be wrong...

Nope, I said Consul.
And as far as I can tell there was a German V4 version of that as well.
But I never saw the car, so can only repeat what I was told back then.
As far as I can remember it was a progressive twin choke, high compression version of the German V4.
And it bolted straight in, without any modification.
As a swap it was really successful.
But I think it would have been a better car with the engine out of the Alfa Romeo...
