Hello World! So I recently had to make a difficult choice. Debt forced me to sell my beloved Eugene, my 1954 Morris Minor. Nothing compares to owning one. My new "A-to-B'er" is a 2001 Audi TT, which I picked up for £500. I won't lie, it's nice to have something that doesn't struggle with hills or highways, but I just don't feel the same about it as I did with Eugene, so I've convinced myself that I can learn to love anything, as long as I put love into it. So, I've attached a picture of the canvas. What can I do to make this Audi feel a bit more... unique? I'm already drafting up wheel ideas. I've got 4 16" steel wheels from a 2000 Beetle. If I get this right, I can get these powder coated and white-walled, just as I did with Eugene, and be on my way to making it a one of a kind.

I'm no good at photo shop wouldnt know were to start but what do you think about lowering (obviously) moon disc and trying to get an old school cal look like a beetle in the 80's or 90's but not sure what else you could do you cant de chrome it or colour code it as its already like that.

Sound like a similar thing I'm trying to do with my cube, but trying to be subtle with it at the same time, at the end of the day its never going to look old, just 'aged' a little. Ive done chrome door handles, which was easy cos they're the stick on type, white letters on the tyres, black door mirrors which also help the blend in a bit, and next will be orange side repeaters, might sound minor but having done a dodgy photoplop it really helps. So I guess its all in the details rather that sticky back plastic wood down the side of the car. Steels is a good start, mabie put a hold on the whitewalls until youre happy with how the rest of it is going.

I don't like these simply because they're everywhere, but looking at your blank canvas I see huge potential for some cafe racer styling ques! don't forget to keep us all updated with some progress photos.

The shape is already kinda classic, I think it would look good dropped a bit and on those steels. There are so many around that are either standard or very "race-car". An alternative, if you don't want to go Cal look would be to "safari" it. Not quite as full off-road as this: forum.retro-rides.org/thread/212822/2001-audi-quattro-road-conversion because it sounds like you want it to be your daily, but just carrying that vibe.

Not a lover of the rodder red wheels & whitewalls myself. I'd think late '60's thin red-line tyre stripes? Old VW style baby-moon hub caps on cream or silver steel wheels? Cream, silver or grey vinyl wrap roof? Mesh or perforated metal grille (if it can't be filled completely)? Chunky 2" chrome bump-strip @ knee height on sides & bumper corners?

Nothing to add here, yet. However, I do like these a lot. I have had ideas and naughty thoughts about them for a while. delux may have some ideas, or even Paul Y who can come up with very creative thoughts.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do. I've seen numerous attempts at retro-ing the TT, none of which (in my entirely subjective opinion) have worked at all. I've no idea why, the shape isn't a million miles from an original Beetle but there's just something about the design that doesn't seem to take retro styling cues, or any styling cues for that matter. They look alright in standard form but pretty much any 'mod' just looks cack. I just realised that's very negative, have an Audi ...

Surely the rally Audi above has just given you all the styling direction you could ever need.

You inspired me to do a quick web trawl. Nothing much out there as has been previously noted but these 'may' be some inspiration. www.autotuning.de/tiefschwarzer-audi-tt-I'm-retro-matt-design/ Beetle wheels Tried and tested formula of lows and wheels Or you could go a bit mental an try and make it look a little bit R8 (Please don't do this)If you're feeling a touch ironic you could go for the Banham look I'll get my coat.............. Wow, I never realised how popular the TT is without having much in the way of body mods available. It seems wheels'n'lows is about as far as most go. The body stuff I could find was mostly pretty rubbish IMHO, but this I quite liked:

As any opinions, that may verge on negative is not at all tolerated, I will just post up my own opinions..... I think that despite its basic “jelly mould” shape, Audi designers got a few lines very right, and that has cemented it into a place where modifying is a bit more difficult, as everything you add onto the basic profile will come out looking a bit cheap. Wheel arch extenders, beautiful wheels like daklone added certainly work, as will the Beetle wheels, that will probably cost as much as the car, unless someone has a set to donate to your car, in order to prove that as a team input build on here, we can creatively make something that DarrenW would photograph and try get a special feature on in Worthersee. I really like the idea of taking the car, that has a few battle scars, and going next level, like pseudonymous suggested and turning it into a Group B rally tribute. The design is relatively low, and lowering, though always good on a car like this, is not necessarily retro flying it. Salt flats, So-Cal type paint and moon discs on a set of steels could be a quick and cheap way to fame if your piggy bank has already bled out before.

I do have some minty fresh 18" Bola B1's with brand new Uniroyal Rain Sport 3's sat in my garage since I sold my golf and the new owner wanted the BBS's instead. Admittedly they are worth a touch more than you paid for the TT, but just sayin... Combine them with some universal arch extensions for less than £40 and you're on your way to covering the battle scars and looking like the one daklone posted above. AL.

Been searching. Most of the cars featured do not use the Broken Piggy Bank principle. These are mostly big buck builds. However, remember Prozac, my Berlingo, where I screwed 1/4 of a Toyota Argo front bumper on under its broken front bumper, and added some VTR Alloys, painted black, with a red, hand painted detail around the edge? You can always go this route, using parts not attached to scene taxes, wheels from other makes (there is a substantial thread on that, one here) and to make a splitter, does it have to be carbon fibre with titanium fasteners, or can you use those weird two ended screw in bolt things, used in sailing to create tension on stainless wires to hold it in position Etc etc. Endless options of cheaper alternatives. Make your own, unique graphics. Here are a random bunch of expensive cars, with wheels the price of a council house....... Ideas. Two tone is a great visual to say, I am different. Make your own wings and diffuser New TT, but you get the idea, if you want to go Satin (Which I would not) And a favourite fr€$h&m1nt¥ may like it too. So the world is your sandpit.
