I'm restoring my Volvo Duett (see other tread) currently and had the original steel wheels (4x15J) rerimmed to 5,5x15J. The used beds are modern ones with a small valve hole. However due to the system used I have now wheels with a tubless hump on the outside but not one on the inside.. Tires planned will be semi modern 185/65/15. I tend to try to run tubeless but I do not know if this will work. Than I have to change to inner tubes. what do you guys think, leave the smaller holes or widen them (It will be a pity after the wheels are painted to do so). Thom

Hi, Back in the 60s and 70s lots of vehicles ran wheels tubeless and didn't have the safety bead. Some tyre places get funny about fitting tubeless tyres on to beadless rims and want to fit tubes. The next problem is that most tubeless tyres have ridges across the inside of the tyre and they can chaff the tubes and a puncture ensues. So in short don't worry about it just fit the tubeless tyres you want without the tube but be prepared for some resistance. You can ask them how in the event of a puncture how a deflated tube is going to stop a tyre moving on the rim...
I am going to stop now because this is a pet peeve of mine and I'm likely to go into a rant.

Modern tubeless tyres have a nail gripping inner layer designed to prevent a blowout if punctured, if a tube is fitted this benefit is lost as the punctured tube would vent through the valve stem slots.
