Hi All, Anybody ever stripped a Britool 1/2" d. Torque Wrench ?? Just been given one but it is totally immobile at the head, everything else is free, It doesn't feel like it's seized, more like it's jammed solid, Any ideas please ?? Nigel,

Can't help with the taking apart bit, but it might have some sort of grit in there. I remember reading an article in Practical Performance Car where Will Holman said he'd managed to salvage numerous ratchets by heating up grease in a saucepan on the gas stove and immersing the ratchet in it, with excellent result as the grease was able to seep in everywhere. He did of course mention that it absolutely stank and I'd reckon it's likely to be grounds for divorce.
That said, you might be able to do something outside with a camping stove or Bbq I guess.

Just like doing motorcycle chains 😂

Got a photo?
Some of the britool ones aren't a ratchet, they're just a torque indicating bar in a way.

As above - My Britool EVT 600A wrench does not have a ratchet - IIRC its an over centre thing with a bit between two other things - LOL - I dropped mine and it dislodged the middle bit - took a bit of working out how to get it back together but I did and a simple weight on a bar checked the calibration was pretty good still.

Mr Bounce, VW & Good Scrap, thanks for your suggestions / help, Darkspeed, having checked it is an EVT 600 A, how do they work then ?? Just tried "loading" it but it still feels jammed, Nigel

Just tried "loading" it but it still feels jammed, Nigel It's not the easiest of things to explain - and I don't fancy taking mine apart again to remind myself - It did involve taking all the loading mechanism to bits as that's what loads the overcentre pivot - I will take a few decent pictures. Q1 - Is the pivot part still in place? If wound all the way back these can become displaced and lock the mechanism.

Hi, If by pivot part you mean the section immediately ahead of the poundage markings that allows for movement each way, yes, still in place and freely moving, Nigel

Thanks for the assistance Dark speed, I suddenly remembered that one of my other torque wrenches is a similar (but larger) model and it would seem that I am missing the "block like" piece at the end, Any ideas where to get Britool spares from ?? (Are they even still trading ??) Nigel

It will come in handy even if you never use it

I wonder if the bit thats lost is part of the mechanism. I always loosen my one off but did it too much and ended up loosing a piece that goes between the round section of the adjustment mechanism and the bit that gives when the correct torque is achieved. I made a new one and then checked the calibration at the place I worked at the time as they has a tester.
The bit is about 6mm thick and has a round bit with a ball end. Probably only 20mm long overall.

Thanks again everyone, Steve G, the part you refer to is what's missing, (think I'll try to see if I can get the piece out of my other Wrench to see if I can copy it,) Good Scrap, many thanks, that's a great deal of help, Nigel

That's brilliant thank you Dark Speed, That is the part that's missing, I'll try to get a replacement or, if not, try to fabricate something, Nigel
