Those passat engines are inline to a transaxle (same as bigger audis) I believe.
Guess it must be, no mention of it in the article. Hes using the stock 4 speed with o\d Amazon box....
passats with the B5 chassis onwards do indeed have the engine the 'right way around' with a trans axle on the back driving the front wheels, exactly the same underneith as an a4. a2s and a3s are the wrong way around.
so to answer your question, no he hasnt had to turn it around, but he will have to change the box or it will be front wheel drive (or running 4motion / quattro stuff!)

I've been thinking this would make a really neat conversion too recently, my daily astra uses the isuzu td, and i reckon it must be able to be mated to the manta getrag 5 speed for some rwd economy torqueyness
