So, I'm after a gearbox for a conversion and BMW's seam to be a good choice. But which one do I need? There are sooo many codes, i've no idea where to start. Can someone point me in the direction of a good resource for manual BMW gearboxes? TIA

What engine are you fitting box onto? I have spare box for m20 6cyl bmw engine , getrag 240, 5speed but know the bellhousing wouldnt fit a 4cyl M10 type engine.

I'm actually fitting it to a Saab b204 block. The box i'm looking for apparently has a code of GS6-53DZ but its the other codes I have no idea about. So for example, one from a 330D has an 'M57' code but another is for either an 'E81' or 'E87'
So i'm guessing the GS6-53DZ is the gearbox and the M57, E81 etc is the bellhousing to engine fitment?

Ok, I'm no expert here but was can say E81/E87 are bmw bodyshell codes for Bmw 1 series , 3door and 5 door models The M57 is an engine code.As is N47 also I googled the Gs6 code and it is 6 speed manual as per this ebay link www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223270357837?var=0No idea if this would fit saab block though, maybe someone else could enlighten you a bit more

None of the BMW gearboxes will fit the Saab block without an adapter plate, if you just want a rear wheel drive box use the Vauxhall omega gearbox as those are a direct fit.
If you need the BMW box due to making 1000NM, the one you need is the 330d/530d 6 speed which is not cheap. The code is GS6-53DZ, but I imagine that is way overkill for what you need.

Yeh, I have a PMC adapter so all set there. I have found a GS6-53DZ but I'm told its from a 123D 1 Series but it also quotes the numbers E81, E82, E87, E88. Are these engine numbers? Is M57 an engine number? Just mega confused by all these numbers and having problems finding the info I need. Am I correct in thinking GS6-53DZ is the actual box code and the other numbers are relevant to the bell housing bolt pattern to the engine?

GS6-53DZ is the gearbox code. e81,e82,e87, e88 are all codes for the vehicle platform and nothing to do with engine or gearbox. M57 is an engine code, so the box will have a bellhousing to suit that engine pattern. Have you got a link to the PMC adapter, or know what the bolt pattern is for? I ask because I doubt it is specifically for the GS6 gearbox, and suspect you could use any old gearbox from an M50/52 which would be better suited to your needs.

M57 is a 3l diesel engine, the 6 speed diesel boxes are very tough, it's probably cheaper at the moment to buy a whole e39 and part it out

The diesel gearboxes are not 1 on 1 equal to the earlier petrol version. The diesel version has the engine tilted to the side less degrees to create room for the turbo.
I would suspect the 123d to have a gs6-37dz gearbox, not the 53dz. Still a very strong box. We have one behind an om606 400+bhp.
A gs6-53bz would be the nicest gearbox, these are from 135i for instance. Petrol version has longer ratios in 1/2/3.
