My Alfa Romeo has at some point had a steel sliding sun roof but has been welded or bonded in shut . I only knew once the corner areas started cracking . My question is , with a rollcage welded in plus a roof lining , how can it be rewelded without the lining being removed then replaced which would be very difficult. ??  |

The short answer is welding is pretty much out if you don't want to pull the headliner, I would suggest you clean all the filler etc out and see what exactly has been done, it its been welded but moisture has got through pores or gaps from behind you may be OK with sealing the welds up with something like epoxy then filling over the top, if not the only thing I can think of is to bond another skin over the top going 2 or 3 inches beyond the sunroof then blend it in with flexible filler.

I'd thought the grinding back idea myself , to inspect then sealing with the resin mix used to join carbon fibre chassis . I was hoping some smart chap might tell me how to keep the heat down to weld the four corners . The corners are no more than 2 inches that need welding

Many moons ago i welded up a sunroof channel on an orion, with a mate underneath it in the car with a blowgun, and we did dampen the headlining first, but that was just a repair and not a full-blown seal up job
Think id be doing what others say and seeing whats been done originally first
