Somehow, just through being into cars I guess - I get given bits and pieces that people have hanging around - and also with most purchases for car parts myself these days being online, I have quite a few bits bought that were wrong, and the supplier gives a refund and I keep the item as it was wrong in their inventory. I have tried eBay on all these items and I got no bids or interest/watchers at all. I very nearly threw these parts out for scrap but I imagined someone somewhere really needing a clutch or something and me chucking these things out only benefits my garage space, not me. I'm not interesting in posting these items, lots of expense and hassle. If you live near kent and need some parts and have an old 'before-windows' laptop or an old FM radio for example, I don't mind swapping. It's not about value, it's just about getting rid of stuff I know is of use to someone else. I recently swapped a spare wheel cover for a morris minor with an old radio for the blind, and both parties very happy. I don't mind bringing them to you or meeting with you half way - I live in Gillingham, Kent & travel monthly to essex & lincoln. It may be worth setting something up full time for this if it becomes popular. No money should ever change hands and nobody should think of value when swapping - it's all about the want, and during these current times I need very little excuse to go for a drive. What I have which I would swap for anything car / computer / electronics related.Rover 25/45/200 1.8/2.0 Front Discs, Pads & Rear Pads PAD911 DM3262 LP625 - also fit honda Complete clutch kit HAK-006 rover 216/civic/concerto Rover hubcaps 15 inch Saab 900 (GM) drivers side driveshaft, water pump, power steering pump, idle valve.

I think this is a super idea. I have stuff I would happily give away that would be useful to someone but can't be bothered with the hassle of eBaying.

I could imagine HoTWire seeing the value in this as a neat alternative to spamming up the For Sale and Wanted section. This is where the Free/Paying it forward/Karma stuff could go as well. It probably won’t be hugely active, like the Pony Express section, but valuable nonetheless. I have some Chevy truck parts, bought in error, long since replaced with the right parts, so cannot recall even what I would have paid for them from “American Car parts” or wherever There is other stuff too, either worthless to me, but worth a trade of even giving away. Personally, I think this is a good idea and hope David can make it work somewhere on the forum, like he does with useful stuff..

Excellent idea, Ive become increasingly frustrated with people’s greed in the old car hobby , I’d rather give stuff to people and hope they would return the favour one day Great idea

All for it, so long as it doesn’t mean people just joining the forum for one post to take advantage of others generosity

As above, this will attract many one post wonders just after something for nowt.
You need a ‘credits’ system for it to work. The forum Software should have this functionality already (karma points or whatever) and f David is ok for it to be used as such.

We could structure it a little differently, but it requires management, and as many will already know I'm absolutely at capacity for stuff right now.
There is a karma system on the forum I think, but it isn't really set up for something like this. If someone can think of a workable way of doing it (or get together with others in PMs and see if you can work out a system) then pitch it, I'll see what I can make happen. Will definitely need someone who will keep on top of it though.

Yes, I agree, swaps and freecycle type area. On R&S its dead, on VZi its intermittent but on UKGSER it is very alive. I suspect on here it has a chance of viability. Lets see what input guys like 60six Dez @mercdan bstardchild joem83 and others suggest. I am sure between them all there will be an even more fine tuned plan or suggestion

I was thinking about the inevitable problems that can happen with something like this, so the conditions could be something like - regular contributor to forum, maybe based on the amount of posts (above 200 within a certain timeframe for example) /regularity of posts, or even a good friend of someone who is on here on a regular basis.
I also think that items which have a value of over 100 pounds are not for this system - I would like it to be predomoinantly spares which people have wasting space in their garages/lockups. It shouldn't matter too much over value though as I would gladly swap something for 100 chicken doggy treats for my furry friend for example. Things that cannot easily be tested like alternators, ECU's, airbag computers, fuel pumps are also in my list of things that shouldn't really be put forward, unless it's really rare and the reciever has the ability of repairing, or in the case of a saab fuel pump, if the main pump isn't working the surrounding filters and plastic can really be worth something to someone who needs a specific part like a gauge float.
One of my best swaps was some laptop memory & hdd for loads and loads of old drill bits - circa 1950 and UK made. Once I got a decent drill sharpener these things are invaluable when nowadays drill bit quality just isn't there no matter what they are made out of and who by - BOSCH should be ashamed of putting their name on the box of those B&Q nightmares.
My work is so sporadic that having to administer it would be difficult, but I think if it is kept to user must have x amount of posts / someone who is well known & no high value items it should have little or no need for it.
It's just an idea that *could* work - Something needs to be done with my 'spares for cars I don't own' department at the back of my shed. I just can't stomach the thought of chucking stuff that could help someone out.
Thanks for the feedback on this.
just worked out that my dogs fave doggy treats can be expensive - 3.50 for a bag of 5, I want 100, that's 70 quid! - forget about the doggy treats ....

What would be amusing if we worked out that between us we could build a complete car out of all these spares. I wonder what it would look like? Probably have an MX5 exhaust & rover front discs to start with ....

I’ve used Vzi’s “freecycle” forum to pass on odd bits of low value VW stuff that’s been too good to bin, but too much aggro to try and sell. Always on a “pay it forward” basis. I’m happy to have a little more space, and for the stuff to be actually used, rather than waste hours of my time chasing a pound or two on eBay. I think having a similar section here would be a good thing. 😃👍
