Anyone have anything to tell me, going to look at one tomorrow, 2001, 3 door in black, 161k, full mot, leather interior with heated seats and some sort of factory nav. My favourite Golf shape, no service history, according to owner, who I suspect is a bit of a driveway dealer, I can ring VW and get history. It will be a daily runaround until I get my Alfa fixed or sold in bits. He wants Β£1390, I would go to Β£1100. π

Just check the usual things with a Turbo, look out for oil smoke and listen for any odd intake noises. If its a 6 speed listen for any gearbox noise in overrun in top, as long as its not too loud it will be ok. There are lots of vacuum connections so ensure you drive it and try different loads and gears etc.to make sure nothing is triggered on the warning lights. Other than that just the usual checks for a high mileage car.

My favourite as well.
Had a 2002 diesel 150bhp GTI
Three door too.
Loved it madly.
I think you need to look around a bit more,
Though not a GTI
2Craigrkmbought his son one two weeks ago for,Β£500.00,and I also always look out for them.
Check the Parkers guide etc, but I think your seller is a bit optimistic.
HOWEVER....... I could be very wrong.
Good luck, and as mentioned, Buyer Beware (says a guy who bought a new used 20 year old car two days ago)

I paid 800 for the same car in Blue maybe 5years ago, tons of history and it'd been remapped. A really solid car, only problem was a water leak due to a plastic flange failing.
That seems like a lot of money for the miles with zero history, to me anyway.

I would leave that one where it is - that's hugely overpriced for what it is. In my opinion that's an Β£800 car max for me - and that's if it's mint.

Have you done a full MOT history check online?
See how well it has been looked after.

I'm just shocked Mk4 shape is people's favourite! I grew up in South Africa, so Mk1 and Citi Golfs were part of the landscape. I think having owned certain cars form part of the attachment. Or that those just seem to be really solid cars.

I'm just shocked Mk4 shape is people's favourite! I think the shape especially in 3 door form is brilliant, also love the headlights and utterly adore the blue illuminated clocks.

5 doors from the land that gave us Sushi And? Very boring really... right until it gets to 6000rpm, there is then a decidedly noticeable change π
