We're looking for an small engined automatic car. Modern or otherwise. Needs are standard car,cheap tax, good mpg, good residual value, decent mechanicals and bodywork, 5 seats and under a grand. Its not going to go miles just mainly local. I do most of my own mechanics and if I can't I know someone who can. We have mainly daily retros at the moment.

I'd avoid anything with dual clutch and no torque converter type trans, they are no end of trouble especially if they have been used around town a lot. (my experience is mainly ford and VW ones there might be better ones from elsewhere but I can't help thinking it a fundamental issue with the technology).

We're actually running a Mk3 1.8 Golf auto estate at the moment which we'll be selling at some point. So we're looking reduce engine size and tax bracket.

What tax bracket is the golf? Pretty sure the tax brackets only went to sliding scale for >2001

Pre 2001 1.6 and above is £270 per year. Below that is £165 per year. 2001 - 2017 is then dependant upon the emissions figures.

A colleague was after something similar for his elderly dad a year or so ago, I’m not sure if it meets all your criteria but I suggested a Ford Fusion which could be a good one to look into.

What about a fiesta? Your not going to save a huge amount on tax though as my 2007 1.4 Fiesta has just cost me £165 to tax for 12 months.
If you want cheap tax then either you need something newee (my wifes 2016 Focus is £20 per year) or something tax exempt but being automatic is likely to make that difficult and expensive to run.
I had a 1967 Mini 850 automatic and it was one of the nicest cars I have ever driven.

I’ve been using my mums peugeot 306 auto this week
Pleasant surprise the little thing drives well
But as it’s only done 30,000 miles since new I’m not surprised, but a clean one is worth considering
