Sure we've all come to the dilemma recently of seeing a car, its miles away and we're in lockdown (me at present haha)
So is Shiply the only option, aside from breaking rules, jumping on a train and collecting yourself are there any other options i've missed
Car is miles away and I'm not comfortable with a long train journey then a long drive back (this isn't about a covid debate btw)
What other 'collection' options are out there chaps?

For me, the concern is not seeing it first...
No idea why I have this concern! I have a history of mostly buying pups when I do see them!
Are AA/RAC still doing inspections?

Are AA/RAC still doing inspections? i enjoy buying blind at times, bit of a gamble haha, I've seen a load of piccies tbf so not mega worried and the car is cheap cheap to warrant a few spends if things aren't quite right. it was just to see if there were other collection options in these difficult car buying times

Only car I've bought blind was my VX220, but it was brand new. I didn't even get to test drive one as they'd sold the demo.
That worked out OK!
Good luck whatever way you go...

I've bought cars blind and having had them moved by a transport guy I now keep his number. He knows where my cars need to go and delivers quickly. They're now getting tighter on the rules. I've recently messaged about a car and they've said they're willing to keep it due to the current situation. I did have a chuckle when I read on a listing that it's considered a part time job if you were going to have a look at a vehicle and bring it back.

I guess this could be the case if you pay a trustworthy mate to do it for you, but how bad would you feel if he catches covid or passes it on to his family?

Would the 'buying a car for work' not be seen as a valid excuse to travel? As an aside - and possibly something to consider - in my area, Essexshire, the police have now started stopping motorists and asking why they are out and where they are going. Both my wife - she was on her way to work, and my cousin - also on way to work, have both been stopped this week so if you do decide to get it yourself be prepared.... And...Pictures? way you bought? P.

The government guidance says that you can leave your home if you have a reasonable excuse such as 'buying goods or services that you need', I'd say a car is a necessary purchase.

Depends on the copper that stops you/distance you travel to buy the car. I’ve seen a report of someone getting a fine for 100 mile journey buying a car as it wasn’t considered a valid reason to travel.

Have you asked if they'll keep it for you once you've paid? I've had a set of alloys at home for 9 months now because the buyer has been unable to collect due to life/work/lockdowns etc. Costs me nothing to keep them in the corner of the patio and he paid in full. Not so easy with a car of course but they may be willing?

For my car in particular my transport guy is coming through yet again. it does to me seem a tad backwards though that a guy with a low loader can go collect a car legally yet the buyer themselves can't. It does create a vicious circle too as i've seen many 'due to unforseen circumstances' sales and the very real future of people are getting skinter and skinter so need to sell a car to maybe pay rent/mortgage/bills/food yet it's so difficult to actually go buy a car so they're stuck in catch22 of needing a sale for survival but no one can actually go buy it. Hope we get back to some normal soon Stay safe everyone

Seems fair enough. I’m not into a nanny state by any stretch, but the situation is bad & there are far too many people saying things like ‘is it ok if a just ........’ No it’s not!!! Stay in the house ffs, what’s too hard to understand about that

Stay in the house ffs, what’s too hard to understand about that What about people that need a car for work? Cars still break down, cars are still coming to their end of life - some cars haven't seen an MOT for over two years now! I've a car legally on the road that last passed an MOT in October '18. I've friends that have a ten year old MPV that's fast heading towards it's end and living in the rural countryside with two small children, and not being legally able to buy a new or used car, it's a relief that I can use the mechanic side of my business to find and collect a car for them. Just because you (or the gubberment for that matter) can't see a different side of the situation doesn't mean it doesn't exist or that it isn't wholly viable and necessary. The situation can be as bad as you like, but it would be a whole lot worse if shop workers and NHS (and truck drivers and farmers and vets and road maintenance crewmen and ferry staff et al) couldn't get to work to provide you with the goods you need to sit at home and procrastinate about who should and shouldn't be allowed to leave their house. So no, I won't "stay in the house" (even if you swear at me), I will continue to go and collect cars, and keep my workshop open, so that I can keep my customer base mobile. If I need to explain that my customer base includes many people affected such as NHS staff, farmers, other vital workers, vulnerable people, carers... if I need to explain that, then you've lost sight of the big picture.

If you need a car for work you don’t have to travel 100/200/300 miles to buy one. Plenty cars for sale locally that will get you to work.
As curse word as it is. It won’t be forever.

I picked up my latest project from a princely 14 miles away...I cycled there so any particularly keen copper would hopefully be satisfied that I was merely exercising.
Deal was done online, cash posted through letterbox in exchange for paperwork. Keys were left in the vehicle.
It can be done.

Bla bla bla bla bla. That isn’t what the op is saying & you know that perfectly well. We are talking here (there is a clue in the name, retro rides) about someone travelling to look at a car they would like, not essential. The rules are clear I didn’t make them. I do hope you or no one close to you is seriously ill or dies from it. You crack on buddy.
