It's official Retro Rides is old enough to apply for its provisional license. Seventeen years! That feels like a long time ago, but it has gone so quick. Then again this last year has felt like a decade. In the life of a website it feels like a very long time, but really seventeen is when you are just about to get going, when your potential starts to be reached. We've survived the initial early years of constant discovery, then the growing pains, learning, changing, becoming more who we are. Then our dramatic adolescence when our friends went off to different schools and we were left standing pretty much on our own. Now we are here, stepping forwards into the next phase, a bit more mature, and only a few scars to show for the learning. This last year has been really strong for the site, we've always maintained a good level of visits and interactions, even during the peak of Facebook mania. Over the last three years the visitors and activity has be rising consistently. Then last year struck and the forum bloomed all at once, and those numbers have stayed strong. We continue to work to improve Retro Rides, with features and improvements on the forum as well as our content that we post on YouTube. The support of Club Retro Rides has seen us through a very tough year and we're hopeful that we can come out the other side better set up to provide more reasons to enjoy what Retro Rides is. If anyone is curious about the size of this place, I recently did some number crunching to see if I could wrangle our hosting costs a bit better (not by much as it happens), whilst doing it I found that we host 2.7 million images. That is quite a few pictures of rusty bits of cars getting replaced! So here we are looking forward to what the road ahead brings us, we've got great dreams and we hope to bring them to reality Here is the first post : forum.retro-rides.org/thread/1There is a fairly glaring mistake in it which I only noticed for the first time this year. Can you spot it?

At some point this place will be older than some of its audience. To celebrate, here's a Lotus 17. And the 17th edition of an important book.

Many happy returns!!
17 years goes bloomin' quickly that's for sure...
When I was 17 (at the back end of the 20th Century) I was itching to get my driving licence so I could get behind the wheel of my Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Merit (E698 FGU you were the best car ever!!). What a machine!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Seventeen?! Amazing! Congratulations RR, really glad this place is here and going from strength to strength. Back then it was pretty much the only forum that catered for the cars I was interested in, and 17 years later it's still the best place to come for my retro car needs!

I've been a long time lurker since 2005, this forum has been an inspiration to my car habit over all those years. There were a few random in-jokes around in the early days - Anyone else remember the "lovely Cressida" auto correct?? Always gave me a chuckle!

So I joined in 2013 how did I not know RR existed before then!!!, absolutely love this forum it’s well set out , well run And has in my opinion the best members out there I came over from buysellcortina which sadly seems to be slowly dying, I guess moving with the times helps here and being a multi vehicle forum I’ve met , and bought and sold from many members here and always recommend it to older car owners at shows or when I meet anybody driving something unusual Thanks Hotwire and all associated for the hard work Long may this forum prosper Danny
Oh and I will add I blame this place for me owning stuff I’d never have considered until I came here Jaguars , Mercedes, a few mgfs to name just a few

I joined late in 2006 - having resided mainly on "one make forums" (Opel Fruit see) and one other large motoring forum - was amazed to see the variety on here and the "appreciation" even if it wasn't strictly peoples tastes
I only liked Opels (and fringe Opels) when I started now I like a lot of different stuff (although I may not want to own it)
That and the fact the rules are simple - the participants are nice and the variety has never changed
"vive la difference"

Looking in regularly and contributing very occasionally I think the forum is as you hoped it would be. I'm sure it's a huge effort and long may it continue. Well done.

Has it really been that long? Wow...
Scarily, I still have the same cars I had when I joined back in July 2004.

I joined in Dec 04, went AWOL for a while when I lost my mojo. I'm back regularly now even though I have nothing retro. Saying that, I've just bought a 17 year old Mondeo ST to replace the Grand Picasso I no longer require. Top work to Mr HT Wire, the other Mods and every member who makes this place what we love today. 😃

This means I’ve been blessed/cursed with knowing some of the other early members on here nearly half my life.
I’ll leave it up to yourselves to decide which category you fall into..🤣

Thanks everyone, I'm amazed some times that there are people that have been with us for seventeen years, and are still active. I love also that people like tonycocacola can drift away from the scene and then come back and slip straight back in again. When I started this forum I had 1996 Mk3 Golf, so less than ten years old, now I think it could happily roll in to a show and be considered retro (with some wheels and lows obviously). I sometimes feel a bit like my school reports when I was seventeen, "has ability, doesn't use it". I always feel RR can and should be more in some manner, and we're starting to gain momentum in that direction.

In fact, it was a Retro Rides flyer left under the wiper at Santa Pod which prompted me to visit and join! It's good to see that more of the original members are here and contributing, it's also great that RR continues to attract new members who get what the place is about and help the forum grow. Here's to another 17 years!
