Background, got a 2002 v70 d5 manual which i think is going a need clutch and dmf soon. Ive also been fancying a big auto estate, so i bought a 3.2 mercedes s211 estate which i think is abit of a lemon and have a baby coming out very soon so spannering time is going to be limited.
So i really want an auto - or id fix the volvo need a estate - need to get a big mountain bike in the back normally a diesel fan but not so fussy but would like decent enough mpg - 30 absolute min around town, more the better. At the minute don't care if its abit dull - but i want heated seats, aircon and cruise control.
Budget well i normally spend at most 1k and usually a less, but will go upto 3k if needed.
I like a s211's but reading up they seem like a pain and complicated car. V70 auto - would be perfect - gearboxes auto boxes seem pretty plop.
Or stop being silly and sort the v70 which is pretty sorted now - brakes all good, loads of new suspension parts bit, belts done etc.
Any thoughts. cheers

You've covered the first ones I'd suggest, Volvo autos need an ATF change the moment they start giving trouble, otherwise not a problem. Other suggestion would be a Saab 9-5. Edit: Not a late one, else you'll be selling a kidney to tax it Me? I'd fix the Volvo......

Completely out of left field, the painter who was repairing the rear bumper of my 95N W124 multivalve diesel estate offered me a ‘53-reg Volvo V40 1.9 TDI diesel estate. Utterly honest and clean, with a long MoT - looked and drove like new, top-of-the-range with electric leather, cruise etc. Drove superbly. 50+ mpg, 115bhp so trotted along nicely. The car had unbelievably covered 214,000miles!! A credit to Volvo and the car’s 2previous owners. Thoroughly recommend.

cheers for the replies guys.
Not sure i can go to any car with less power than the volvo, even though the volvo is a 2002 car it sets the comfort and quality bar pretty high.
Ive always liked e39's but i have been warned off the auto version by a few people saying the gearboxes are an annoyance when driving.
The merc is growing on me, my main concern was a wheel bearing/brake rubbing sound - which looked like brake dust shield, which had been sliced through and then bent around everything - while checking found more bodges - silicone on a split balljoint rubber and the arb just disconnected.
Think the noise is the centre prop bearing as it only does it at lowish speeds when off the throttle - touch the throttle and it stops.
List of jobs on the merc. front balljoint trackrod end arb links. rear hub has a snapped abs sensor stuck inside it so needs taking off and drilling out. rear parking brake useless boot struts useless - and £55 each
Volvo £500 clutch and dmf kit and a weekend subframe off job or drive like as steady as possible to make it last.
Been told other stuff needs to go first, before i can think about another car haha.

The gearboxes aren't that bad in BMWs. I've driven a few E39s and E46 autos, including
-E61 535d SE Touring -E39 520iES 2.2 -E39 540i 4.4 -E46 330d Auto.
The 535d I don't know why you'd want it as a manual. The auto suits the car. It's genuinely effortless pace with just correctly controlling your right foot (i.e almost changing gear with the throttle).
540i I felt similar, but I must be wrong as the manual cars do go for more money. They go very well as an auto. Just put your foot down and the torque band just sorts things out.
520i was OK as an auto. It revved a little high for me (3.5kRPM to change), but then they're not the torquiest engine for that car either. Changes were fine.
The 330d I'll admit I found a little annoying. It seemed to be a little slow on the changes regarding response. The manual E61 530d I drove was nicer than this, and I'm not normally a BMW manual fan. But things like a MAF sensor being iffy can transform gearboxes, as ultimately, the gearbox will only change to what it can see the demands/loads are. If the inputs are not right, things will go awry. It was a far cry from the 535d we had.
I also know of an E39 525d which did 520k before the gearbox started giving issues. Reg of that car was Y272 BRW for anyone wondering.
If you can go to £4k somehow, I'd say get an E61 535d. They are a gear car. You can get them cheaper but I'd not want to.
That said, I wouldn't discount the right E39 530d Auto but you may be looking a while for one.
Like others I'd get the V70 repaired. Good ones are hard to come by cheap now, and they are a great lump. If I didn't have a fake Volvo of my own (Monvo) I'd probably have a D5.
