It pleases me no end that this still exists, although "cool" is subjective:

Bath had Horstmann (still active as a defence company, now minus the last n). There's a Horstmann car with nice display about the company in the Museum of Bath at Work, which is well worth a visit if you're into industrial heritage type of stuff.

I live in the F1 corridor, but not much road car manufacturing here. Was a steam car made in the 1860s And we also have the oldest garage in the UK it seems www.autocar.co.uk/slideshow/inside-britains-oldest-garage#3Other than that within 10-15 miles there is Newport Pagnell and all that has been posted on that, Banbury which has Prodrive and also had Ascari cars, Aylesbury made a Cubbitt around the First World War And Paramount made cars in Leighton Buzzard

Just posting an update to my OP. May edit this in at the end so I can find it again! I thought I might do a ride-around and see if I could find any of the old works. While looking up addresses, I found this site: www.geocities.ws/kelada2000/cars.htmI didn't even know Geocities still existed, but it looks a bit like geocities.ws rescued all the old sites and re-hosted them. There used to be a lot of good information on them back in the day and I thought it was all gone. That can make the links a bit harder to access, particularly on sites which are long gone. However, wayback machine makes it a bit easier. From the links there, we've got: Carden in Teddington who became AV Motors. Apparently the garage on Teddington railway bridge was still called AV Motors until a few years ago, so that shouldn't be too hard to find. The AV factory was on Somerset Road. These are all a 5 minute ride from work. Tamplin in Staines were at Railway Garage, Kingston Road, Staines. There's an Art Deco building around there which could have been their premises. Maybe a pipe dream hoping it's that one, but you never know. Else, there are quite a few other premises along that bit of the road which could have also been a garage back then. I can go down this road on the way home from work. The Tamplins of Twickenham premises in Twickenham shouldn't be too hard to find, as all of them have building numbers in the WBM link. Frazer Nash in Isleworth. Bit of a longer ride, this one, as will be HRG. Railton will be more of a weekend ride, but shouldn't be too hard to find. Cooper were in Surbiton. That's doable one lunchtime, as is the Cooper's house in Kingston.

Ride-around 1 results. The Carden / A.V. factory. This wasn't very obvious. It's a residential road with the railway line at one end. Presumably useful back in the day, as it had access to the railway. It's mostly small residential houses which pre-date the business. There are three newer developments, one of which I guess is where the factory was. First is this one, which is the newest. There's a lot of space at the back, which is a possibility. Then there are two more, 50s or 60s at a guess, either side of a school which has been there since 1974. So it could be any of these, really. For the A.V. garage, it wasn't the building I thought it was. Got down there and it looked nothing like a garage so goes to show how much I pay attention. However, found this from Motorsport Magazine archive: So that was easy enough to work out. Pic of what's there now: Bit disappointing

Oh, I'm 3 miles or so from the Linwood site where these wee badboys were made. Long gone now but the admin building still stands with some decent heritage memorabilia in it.. I served my time as an apprentice where these were built on the other side of the "watter" ...sadly they only make axle and driveline parts now. Lastly, and perhaps physically closest to me, the AC 3000ME was built in Hillington: I read through before posting about the Rootes factory.... less than a mile for me 😎 Close family member ran the office building until a few year ago, don't suppose you went to the 50 the Anniversary of the Imp celebration there? 👍

There’s a couple that spring to mind near me. Down the road in Surbiton is the old Cooper Car Company building. This was owned by Charles Cooper and his Son, John Cooper. They built the Cooper racing cars and the Mini Cooper rally cars! The building nearly got torn down and turned into flats a few years ago when the owners couldn’t find a buyer. Thankfully it was saved at the last minute and is now a Porsche specialist. I believe the building also has National Heritage Status now so it can’t be torn down in the future. A little further down the road in Thames Ditton is the old AC Cars factory on Ferry Road. They made numerous cars over the years, although the only two that immediately sprang to mind for me where these two! I’m not entirely sure what the building is used for these days but here it is back in the day! Unfortunately the AC Cars signwriting has gone from the other side of the building which is alongside the Thames.

I showed the old willys smoke stack in Toledo Ohio, in Findlay there were also builders but many have no surviving pictures. First was the Adams Brothers Truck Co which built heavy trucks from 1911 to 1917. I didn’t find any pictures but did find an advertisement. They built cars for one year (1912) with about 40 being produced. Next was Findlay Motor Car Co that built from 1910 to 1913 when they went out of business and the assets were snapped up and renamed Grant. Grant actually built 6 cylinder race cars, convertibles and an attractive coupe till 1916 when the company moved to Cleveland. These were exported to Europe and Britain as the Whiting-Grant That manufacturing building was destroyed by a tornado in 1917 but I know the address and it’s a water works plant now. Then the Findlay Carriage Co that had been making carriages since the 1880’s started making cars in 1909 and made the Superior til 1917 when it’s plant was destroyed by fire. More of interest was the tire company; Giant Tires, that came here to feed the car manufacturers managed by I.J. Cooper from 1917 on. It was renamed Cooper Rubber and Tire in 1919 and has been in continuous manufacture since here. Also of interest is the Ohio Oil company that came to the area in the 1800’s during an oil boom and stayed; becoming Marathon Oil company which has also been here since.

Manchester has a few to offer but possibly the most obscure is the Yak Yeoman made by Manchester Garages Ltd in Gorton. When I was a kid, someone near me had one and it fascinated me. Much later I learned from the internet that they were intended to be a ckd kit for shipping to developing countries. The running gear was RWD Ford with a clever gearbox with lower ratios to help it off road. The only one I've seen since primary school is this one in the Museum of Science and Industry (which is amazing if you're ever in Manchester with time to kill).

In Devon so the only ones that spring to mind at Marlin and Murtaya. The fibreglass bodies for the Panther Lima were made in Newton Abbot.

I live 5 miles from the old Newlands works factory, West Leeds, that built Aston Martin's in the 50's, and I'm 10 miles from Ginetta cars in Garforth.

Coming from Salford originally but from the age of ten, until shifting overseas, lived in Cheshire. So ignoring the likes of Vauxhall in Ellesmere Port and Bentley in Crewe as too easy, I happened upon the world reknowned Eagle Engineering & Motor Company of Oakfield Road, Altrincham, Cheshire, a mere 14 miles from my old home town of Bollington. So, why don't we have Eagle's belting around the highways of Great Britain then? Well mainly because they ceased production in 1907, after only six years. Yes, that'd explain it. And one can kinda see why... Definitely cool though...in winter!

I looked after that F2 car for a few years. It was back in its Alta form. I see here its got its Jag engine in. It was a such a well made machine, just a bit under powered for the period

I grew up in the next village to Carlton Automotive/Delta Styling. They made kit cars and Bodykits.
