So... The fusion has gone. It's MOT was up and it sailed through, only needing a track rod end, absolute win for a £400 car. However, 2 days before, my sisters 1.6 auto fusion snapped it's cam belt, late at night, just outside of some strange place called 'Totnes' or something similar, she lives so far down south it's virtually a different country. Anyway, It was dark and she kept trying to start it until the battery died, then the Green Flag man came out and tried to jump start it until it just 'sounded like a bag of bolts' according to my sister. He then gave up and stated ' that's one broken engine', chucked it on the back of his truck and took her home to Plymouth. She rang me the next day and explained what happened. I talked her through taking the cam belt cover off via video phone, and we were met with two bare pulleys and the stripped remains of the belt, so I guess that between my sister and the Green Flag guy they managed to batter the engine to destruction trying to start the poor thing. So being the fabulous and amazing guy I am, I drove down to Plymouth and gave her my freshly mot'd Fusion. I'm now left with no car, and virtually no funds as I did not sell my car... Anyway, I'm in the market for something, hopefully retro, or maybe just a bit quirky, for roughly 600 - 700 quid. After that the cupboard is bare.. Doesn't need a hell of a lot of MOT, but it does need enough to get me to the spring at least with not too much trouble Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated cheers I have just read the attached part of this thread and what an amazing act of kindness and generosity, I take my hat off to you

Me too I have been thinking about one for a while then changed my mind then started looking again a few weeks ago, sadly the prices seem to have gone up quite a bit when I changed my mind I actually looked at a couple of the Fiat Pandas.

If you can fit a clutch then I have a Peugeot 406 that might fit the bill. MOT'd till March just needs some cosmetic things and the clutch is on it's last few thousand miles. In no rush to sell as it's my tow car lol but one good turn deserves another oh and it would be cheap.

What about your sister giving you her broken one and you could drop a ST engine in? I'm 250 miles away from hers, I couldn't get it moved back home, and I don't have the facilities for an engine swap. Plus she only has one parking space so it had to get moved unfortunately

That's an idea, however I'm not really going to able to do a clutch as i don't have the space to do much heavy work. I'm actually looking at a few things on ebay that are close ish, but message me a few more details about your 406 if that's ok and thank you for the offer

So, after a, shall we say 'interesting', search for a vehicle I have managed to get hold of a not particularly retro, ok not at all retro, vehicle that will serve for now Thanks for advice and such, as usual it has been most appreciated. I must say that it is a minefield out there right now, for example, I found a half decent looking astra estate, that the owner assured me was fine, not rotten, and drove perfectly. However, a quick check of previous mot's online, showed it to have corrosion on the underside and strut tops and had been like that for a while, plus an advisory was that it 'smoked on acceleration'... Also I went to view another astra, which was pretty good but again smoked like a trooper on the test drive, plus two agilas, one that had a dodgy throttle, and another that drove like the brakes were stuck on. Couple that with numerous ads that sound fine to start with but end with ' has no MOT ' or 'drives fine but as of this morning won't start' or even 'cambelt snapped' and I was starting to think I was going to be without anything useable for the foreseeable future, then I found something on Auto trader, not my usual thing, but it had a long mot ( actually ends on my birthday next year...not sure if that's a good thing or not) and was close by, so I bought it. I am now the proud (ish) owner of a 2007 Suzuki Liana 5 door GL. In champagne gold. To be fair it drives like its on air its that much more comfortable than most things I've had, it's fairly well specced, and so fair it's pretty frugal on the gas. We just haven't 'bonded' yet Obligatory photo of the 'gold thing with a weird back end' as my daughter christened it when i got it back home..

Unfortunately my sis had to get it gone to make way for the replacement, timing and logistics were lacking for bringing it home. As for the Liana, I don't hate it either, although it's got a few niggles, such as needing a cv joint sometime soon, two new cv boots, a TPS sensor, a new rear bumper bar, and the tracking down of an annoying intermittent 'knock' from the front that sounds like a ball joint or track rod end, but even with hanging off them with a massive bar I cant find excessive play on either side, and both drop links seem ok too. It might be a case of replace stuff systematically until it goes away.

I feel either some red tint wrap or split the tail lights and paint the silver black might help with the weird back end. Also lows & wheels.
That said the pre-facelift lights are already red & £15 each lol
It's one of the white goods type of car's so shouldt be a bad motor.
Cheap wheels ahoy – Center Bore: 54.1 mm – PCD: 4x100 – Wheel Fasteners: Lug nuts – Wheel Tightening Torque: unknown – Thread Size: M12 x 1.25 - ET45

Actually I have now found what I think is the issue. I had it up in the air but this time with the wheels jacked up as well so it was as if it was 'on its feet' so to speak, and what I found was that the anti roll bar was extremely close to the bottom arms and the drop links were quite saggy, no actual play in them, but not stiff, so they allowed the bar to move a fair bit and connect with the bottom arm, hence the knocking. I'm hoping that a new set of drop links will do the trick, they should be here by next weds so I will find out then.

Oh Lord (13), what´s the news? What's the news? Well a couple of things here and there, I've not been on here for some time so maybe an update is due on the liana . . . So, jobs I have done : New pre face-lift rear lights New rear fog light (I didn't like the fact its one fog and one reverse, it looked odd, so I bought a European reverse light as its the opposite side, stuck a red bulb ìn it so I still have a fog light but now I have two clear lights instead of one red and one white.... but now I've bought a euro fog so I can have two red if I want, I just have to decide on after market reverse lights and do some re-wiring) New clutch.. it was a pain in the ass as some of the bellhousing bolts were hidden by the engine crossmember and I had no crane so it was a case of drop one mount, undo bolts and put mount back and then do the other side, took a total of 14 hours over 2 days... jeez I am getting old. Mounted aftermarket fog lights on the front, as the only ones I could find that are for my car were in Lithuania and 40 quid each! At least all the wiring is there so it's basically plug and play. Fitted roof bars and roof basket from the fusion, a little bit of fabrication to fit the proper mounts In the roof but it all looks good to me. Fitted new cv joints and boots both sides.. And I think that's about it It's still going strong so far ... I'm still not friends with it but we have an uneasy truce going on....
