Not sure if the mot/tax exemption will be affected From what ive read if the engine is a replacement of the same type, ie same fuel, number of cylinders etc, it can be classed as a’replacement part’ if the original type is not available Not sure if that’s exactly what they mean, but I know for example that you can fit a 200tdi Land Rover Engine into a diesel series and it still keeps its exemption.

Transplant only affects the mot requirements, historic status is not affected or the other "entitlements".

Basically anything that wasn't originally fitted to a Capri or commonly fitted when the car was current will lose MOT exemption (it's all a bit woolly though because it allows you to make changes which improve fuel economy or emissions as well without losing it too so you would seem to be able to fit just about anything with a catalyst!), To lose tax (and registration) you would have to radically alter the car so it no longer keeps the 8 points on the DVLA method. you start off with 14 points and the engine loses you 1, the transmission 2.

also bear in mind, if you fit a lighter engine, it will effect the handling and ride height of the car.
personally id stick with the pinto and mildly tune it.

I would stick with the pinto unless you want a project sat on your drive for the next 10 years which will drain your energy and money while the bodywork goes south. Better to keep using it and enjoying it for the next 10 years then put and electric motor in it when that’s at a drop in/kit phase 😉

2.0 Zetecs are begining to get expensive, Duratec are still cheap. What would the Duratec route entail after finding the engine, does it fit to everything easily or do you get nickel and dimed on all the little conversion parts?

You would need a new bellhousing or use an RX8 gearbox, lots to fab up.

IF you're planning on keeping the car long term I'd go for a zetec/duratec conversion - MX5 'box fits on the duratec so is cheap enough to find. The duratec is lighter, but only by 25KG or so.

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the replies! I have been giving this some thought I will be sticking with the Pinto for a few reasons. Like most of you said with a freshen up or rebuild I would only be a few hundred in (I think i need a clutch too). With a Zetec I might struggle when it comes to Tax/Ulez zones down in London. The Capri seems to be the only exempt Car in the house at the moment too!! I'm sure it would be fun but over the last 3 weeks I've hardly had time to drive it so It would definitely fall into the "on stands for the next 10 years" category.
Also having a good hard long look at both my old Fords, I kind of love them for what they are and the engines they have. We just got a new family Car too so there is less pressure on either of them being transplanted for new efficient engines and if anything more pressure to get the Capri right to hopefully use to go into London being an exempt classic.
I still think its an interesting topic though and would love to drive a Zetec Capri just to see the difference. Its probably easier for me to keep going with what I have though at this time.

I once had an injection pinto sierra and the engine was great personally I would freshen up the pinto, either fit a re-con carb (will transform it) or even better but far more work and expense an injection system, a decent ignition system like a mega jolt will also help.
