They still do this nowadays.
They have an area called heavy repair.
I've been in a major car manufacturing plant and seen sh1t with my own eyes you wouldn't believe.

Pretty standard stuff when I used to work in main dealer body shops, loads of techniques that were used to get panels to line up…..athough usually before the car was painted🤣

I remember a trip with the local Mini Club to watch classic Minis being built at Longbridge and there was a guy with a huge wooden hammer smacking the door aperture to make the doors fit properly!
