Car insurance for young driver

Anyone got any advice on insurance companies for my son
18 years old current quote £1700 for his 1.4 fiesta

Have you tried the usual compare the market sites?
Both my cars are with Brentacre, it's the first insruance company in 21 years of having car insurance that are actually pleasent to deal with. Worth giving them a try, they beat everyone else by quite a lot as well

Have you tried you insuring the car in your name and making him an additional driver?

I know you said he's 18 but has he had access to a company car for a year?

Back in the day I was allowed to drive my dad's company car from when I was 17. I bought my 1st car at 21 and was able to claim 4 years no claims discount even though I'd never had an insurance policy in my name during those 4 years.

Passed his test a month ago
The company his with are being complete curse word and now want more money because of an error on there behalf
So we’re shopping around

Has he been a named driver for a year whilst learning? Some companies will take that also

Best we had for both girls was Lancaster with a black box , 1.4 is prob the killer.
The 1.2 fiat 500 is £850 for the youngest with her Mum as a named driver , £1000 without..

Another thing to add is that having more named drivers can lower the quote. This will only work if his risk level is below a certain threshold, and you've got a good driving record, but when going through the compare sites you can add yourself and any other adults in the household who would be of a lower risk and see.

It used to work when I was around his age, but that's 15 years ago now, so they may have got wise to that as well. I think it had something to do with the total risk. If there are three drivers and two are low risk, then in theory two thirds of the time the vehicle is being driven at a lower risk.

Could be absolute balls, but it's what we used to do, and it had the benefit of not being against their T&C's, whereas the named driver really being the main driver can get you a telling off.

To be blunt, that's not a bad price for a noob. My brother-in-law has just passed his test (he's 22) and has paid £1200 for his 02 Polo 1.4 16V.

Sometimes the engine size isnt the issue, it's number of claims for the age group of drivers.

Years ago (when I was 24ish), I got insurance quotes on a E39 M5 & E46 M3, the M5 was way cheaper dispite being bigger, faster & heavier. Just a shame I couldnt afford the car lol

I'm (and other younger owners) paying less to insure my Mustang than a lot of the older owners, assuming it's because most owners arent under 40.

Ella’s first year with black box was about £1400

This year, with one years no claims and no box it’s £650-ish, with 6000 mile limit

I've just tried to insure my son on our Mk2 1.3 Golf £1300 plus. A friend priced learner driver insurance on (High to low) a Corsa, an A class, a Clio. So he now owns the Clio. A case of perseverance for the right price or change the car.
