I didn't know I wanted another Passat wagon until this one came up on Facebook Marketplace in early June. It ticked a lot of boxes for me; Estate ✅ VW ✅ Colour ✅ Lowered ✅ Clean ✅ Tow bar ✅ Load lugger ✅ Diesel ✅ In my budget ✅ So I got intouch with the seller and arranged a viewing on a Friday afternoon. 86 miles from work down to Stafford. Wheh I got there the car didnt dissapoint, as clean as described if not a little better for its age. Took it for a test drive and that's when I noticed the whine on the gearbox that hadn't been mentioned (apparently the guy that had it was half deaf and didn't notice it anymore 🙄). This placed doubt in my mind, the owner said it has been like that in the 2 years he's had it, so I tried a barter at £570 (he wanted £650) and got him to £590 and said I would have a think about it and let him know latest Sunday evening. Photos from when I viewed;

So the Sunday came, it had been on my mind all weekend, looked up prices of gearboxes etc and was going to go for it. Was in the garden most of the day that Sunday and left my phone indoors.
At around 4 I went in and went to Msg about thr car but he'd beet me to it, the seller said someone had come to view and had took it there and then, gutted I was!

So fast forward to this week, Monday 5th July it crops up again on Marketplace. Msg sent straight off, got a contact number to deal with the new seller. I struck a deal and picked it up on Thursday, a little anxious of the gearbox issue but so far so good. I got it for £470 😳 It's the nicest condition car I've ever had and intend to keep it that way and on top of this one. So a nice show vehicle for my business, family wagon and tow vehicle for a vintage caravan I bought last year. Stay tuned!!

My business show plates arrived today so gave Passat a wash and fitted them up. There to go on customer vehicles for taking photos, a little more professional I thought.

Why did it get listed up again so quickly at a loss?

Why did it get listed up again so quickly at a loss? The guy that bought it had spent 14 years in Spain working, he came back over here for 6 months and then got offered work back over there again and had to leave that weekend so needed it gone.

That's fair. I was just wondering as you well know they get shifted quickly for dodgy reasons sometimes. It looks really nice. I just bought an A4 Avant but I ideally wanted one of these or a MK4 Golf estate. Which engine do you have? I got the PD130 and I am really surprised at the power.

It's pd130 but its been mapped to 180, its very rapid. It's a great car other than the gearbox issue. It's nice to have a car that starts on the button, doesn't have a cv joint knock on every turn, odd or bald tyres, running issues etc *quick touch wood*

What MPG are you getting as well?

I’ve had two of these and both were eBay purchases bought blind in a rush.
Blue cost a grand, did 28000 miles and had 200k on when I bought him. Didn’t service it once and drove all over Europe and finally into the scrapyard after doing Italy to Essex in less than 24hours and it was flawless. Other than the rust.
Amber was a 4motion that cost a couple grand and I actually did the cam belt and servicing on her. Never missed a beat and it was the first car I managed to sell on. Did need welding again.
Both were remapped to 180 and the mpg improved! They shift so well for the size and brings back great memories looking at yours, especially with the mods which I couldn’t justify at the time.

Thoughts? This rack was on my first car a ratty Mk Polo bread van. Do we think cleaned up with some nice Varnished wood and a couple of choice accessories would be nice or just trying too hard?

Think it spoils the overall look of the car TBH.

The 130 -180 is well within the capabilities of the engine. I've had PD150 golf and Galaxy (WGR) remapped to 180, they were taken to 230+ by some. iirc the 150 had stronger crank and larger intercooler as the only real difference. Oil changes are the golden rule using a PD rated oil , i used triple QX from ECP and it always came out looking good on changes. EGR mapped out is good , they're utterly pointless on diesels.
Gearbox whine is common on 6 speed, can go forever like that or......
Nice car.

Is it guaranteed to pull the EML on as well without a map? What advantages did you seen?
