I am not too clever with the stuff many of you take for granted and know, off by heart.
Does the Mk2 or Mk2.6 Mazda MX5 1600 engine have one of those “no damage” timing belts or chains that the Mk1 seems to have?
I understand the 1800 needs the timing belt to be teplaced as it can destroy the engine if it lets go.
Hope my question makes sense.
Thanks.

All the mx5 engines from 1989 to 2005 (Mk1 to Mk2.5, 1600 and 1800) are non interference engines so no damage if the timing belt snaps.
I believe all the Mk3 onwards engines are interference.

If you are taking the engine out of a car to fit into another one, I assume this is for the Resin Rocket, then it’s a no brainer to just fit a new cambelt, tensioners, valve cover gasket and water pump while it’s ‘on the floor’, total no brainer.

What Rich said. If you've heard an engine run, or know it to be a good'un, then all of the above whilst it's easy to do is for sure the way forward.

Thanks Rich Yes it is for the RR I was given an 1800 and gearbox butnot sure there is much else. A complete car should help me with things like wiring etc. And doing the service otems is sich cheap insurance while on the floor. I understand from the seller it is a runner which is the only point I could start from really.

I understand it is a running driving car, well…… was in 2018 when last had MOT and failed. This was its list. I still think it should be perfect for the RR. .

They're an easy job in the car, piece of cake on the bench. One does wonder why the car was left to rot away when the mot work wasn't too bad.

NOT SO UNPREDICTABLE CHANGE OF DIRECTION.so after quite a bit of thought, and chatting to various people, including those who spend my cash regularly, and a dose of my own opinion and ideas, I decided to see if a £500.00 MX5 Donor could be found. And then ot happened…….. a certain member I have known for 15 years or so, offered me a deal I wanted to, but did not resist. Stored about 4 years in a barn……. Dusty. Complete, except for the catalytic converter…….. And 283 miles from me. Delivery in exchange for a cuppa tea and cookies and an hours chat. So a price was agreed, and two photos came my way. First pic absolutely sold it for me Second one meant that I could check the MOT history. Slightly better award winning photography. So I checked the MOT history. Note the low mileage. 68190 miles. Car was registered end of December 2000 A quick search, based on the registration showed it to be a 1600cc engine. Delivery has been scheduled for Sunday, given that all the planets align. I am sure those of you in the know will recognise who the seller is, based on the origin of the delivery road trip. Our very own KFW. So tomorrow morning I will have to cut down the body table and add wheels to it, to make it mobile as the plan is to park the MX5 under cover. PS. I always wanted a canary yellow car or truck. Wish about to be fulfilled. .

So next question.
If the CAT was removed (it has been) and you had a straight through pipe (or at a push a small silencer en-route) and a Cherry Bomb at the rear…….
Just how noisy would that be for the MOT guy ?
Or the general public.
Think anti-social thug but not quite getting stoned by the village.
Make sense ?’

Depends on your MOT guy, they never have a decibel meter on site so it's subjective.

Make sense ?’ You want at least 2 cherry bomb type silencers if you don’t want too antisocial. A biggish straight through as a centre silencer with a cherry bomb out the back will produce a nice noise. Losing the cat will create a lot of additional noise as it’s a flow-slower immediately after the engine so with just one cherry bomb it’ll be loud.

I am also sure there has to be some used Mongoose and other brand parts out there. I want the noise to make people look up from their Prosecco and burgers if they are car people. But Not make them go WT actual F So some combo should work better than just a straight through. Thing of doing a 100 mile trip and not having a throbbing headache at the end of it.
