Well, it looks like my lucky streak has continued!

Haven’t managed to get much done today, but have done a bit of reading and part pick up.

Lucky part pick up…
I managed to get the part worn tires for $50!



They have been used for a few drives on a serious turbo Miata and has scrubbed the edges off, but that shouldn’t matter on my ‘high powered’ 912





Even more reason to get those steels sanded and painted!

Reading some posts on a 912 forum, it seems a number of people have put electric primer pumps or hand held pumps, to get fuel to the carbs and fill the bowls to get the car going after a long time of no running. So tomorrow it looks like I’m going to be hunting for a hand squeezed pump primer from a boat shop!

Had today off from work, so thought I could have a bit more fun.

With the tyres now in the garage, the push to get the wheels done and out of the way, struck home. Hopefully once assembled it will save space AND I can then have a go at painting the fake Fuchs that are currently on the car!

So much sanding (when did my hands get so old and crampy?) and another layer of primer.





While the paint set, I went down to the local toy shop (auto parts) and picked up a hand primer to help the fuel pump.


$40! Next time I will order one on line! I’m thinking it probably wants to go before the filter, just to be safe.

Fitting set for tomorrow because it was 90F and not too windy, so out with the steel ‘Tractor enamel’ paint.
I’ve used it on a Subaru in the past (in a golden yellow colour) and it was bomb proof!





Not too sure about the finish though.
It’s almost like a chrome finish rather than the slightly grayer look on the spray can cap.

Looking at the stock wheel next to it, they look very different. Not 100% sure I like it, but I have 3 more cans of the stuff now. Oh well, maybe the next couple of sands and coats will calm it down a little.

Far from perfect, and the reflective nature is picking up more surface issues that I would like.

I’ve just found out it’s ‘Back to the 50s’ car show this weekend. The Trashmen are playing (heard about the bird?), so do I go there or plug on with the car? It’s supposed to be close to 100F tomorrow, so maybe an early start is the only way.

I picked it up initially, as one of the local farmers recommended it over Hammerite (it’s in the same isle in the farm store). He claimed it resisted chips better.

I originally used it on some older Subaru wheels that I expected to use as Minnesota winter wheels, but the finish was so good, I used them all year round.

Probably going off to the car show today. Even though it’s going to be a nuclear temperature and sunny. The hand pump will have to wait (not said in a Frankie Howard way…)

These were the Subaru wheels. As ever, I was being cheap. I think the four wheels cost me $100 and then spent three days sanding, priming and painting them!












Still looked like new when I sold the car a year or so later (sorry can’t find pics of the car right now other than the engine bay).

Is there a manufacturer on the can so I can ask them for a european source, please?

I buy it at a store called ‘Fleet Farm’.
On the can it says ‘Distributed by Fleet Wholesale Suppy Co., Inc., Appleton, WI 54914.
I would offer to put a couple of cans in the post (think I’ll have two left over), but I don’t think they take pressurized cans through international post???

Good progress on the wheels, wheels maketh the car. I can see the link between Minnesota and Scandinavia, your pics of the open roads look just like here in Finland. No wonder so many latter day vikings settled there over the years.
One advantage I think of America is that it's a multi-cultural society, where I moved to in Finland is pretty much just Finns. It gets a bit tiring to hear only one viewpoint or method, or to not be able to enjoy the food or music or lifestyle of other cultures. Not to mention years of work to be accepted and trusted as "that foreigner"
Other than that it's a fantastic place to live and i'm way happier here than I would be in England, even though I came from Devon, which everyone knows is a very lovely place. I'd kill for a sunday carvery at the Horse and Hounds though.

I know just how you feel being similarly displaced!

My mother-in-law often couldn’t understand my accent (which as I’m originally from Leicester is a bit odd as it’s not strong anything really) but just today was asked if I was Australian or English. 

I wonder if one view point is better or worse than very opposite viewpoints in the same society. I would say that the people in the middle are easily out numbered by those with strong right or left opinions here in MN. 

The wheels are pretty enjoyable to do - thanks. Need to get another coat on there and then get valves fitted and the tires on. 

I’ve been putting off the getting the 912 started, but tonight on the way home, I saw a burnt Orange 911 / 12 SWB narrow body going in the other direction and that really got me going again!

Now I have the Jeep, I’ve been looking for a dolly for towing and occasional local track day duties. I went to have a look at this:



Its ex-rental and lifetime tax. Built like a tank (as ex-rental), weighs about as much as a tank but is almost the right money $1k (not free!), but I’m not sure I have space to store it, which is a bit of a poo.  

Might have to do some garage clearing and see if I can store it in front of the bosses SUV…

Seeing it on line, I wondered if I could block and tackle it upright, but it’s all steel. It was all I could do, to lift it to bring the hitch to truck height!

I am sure I've seen a tow dolly like the U-haul ones that is designed to store in an upright position - probably not for a thousand bucks though. I'll have a search and see if I can find it again.

Thanks for that. I would go for it as it covers so many needs, but the shipping is $500! That makes it almost double the UHaul.

I just checked and it’s a 16hr drive each way. Think I might have to save my pennies to kid myself into thinking the shipping is free.

I’m not quite that creative!

Been busy again with other stuff (story of my life of late) and not had much time for the Neiner.

A good friend got wed at the local University stadium. Quite a treat as we got a stadium tour including things like the locker room.









The stadium itself is nothing to sneeze at either! This is a $2k box seat…



And then there were tears after an announcement on the Jumbotron…

Soon after, (and I’m not sure if I mentioned it before) my 13 year old son decided to hold a skateboard competition. Yeah…
Even got as far as getting sponsors from local businesses. So we went to th city council and shockingly they gave approval, so I had a bunch of fliers printed and for the princely sum of $5, anyone between the age of 7 and 17 could enter and get a free T Shirt. First prizes were boards donated from the local skate shop for all three classes.






It was very busy and hands on leading up to the big day… how many people would turn up? Would we have enough of everything? Would the judges turn up? Would the guy with the docks turn up with materials that we could make bleachers out of?

The dear lady wife did a lot of the hard work. Even sweeping the course!



It was a great day with around 30 kids, which with parents and helpers meant we had around 100 people all told.



Everyone went away with a prize of some sort or other and a T shirt… and the show from the Advanced group was amazing!








I didn’t get to watch much, but videoed this run…



So this weekend has been quiet.

I’ve been talking to a local VW restorer about respraying the neiner for me (more to come) and I sanded down the steels and put another coat of paint on. I left it too long as the paint had gone off like a rock, so ended up with some pretty agressive paper to flat out some minor areas.
Next coat applied and one more to go!

Hoping to get some tires on there next!

Today as I was driving to the hardware store (diy store) to pick up some material to repair the wife’s paddle board, I saw this…





Not sure if they realised that the engine lid was open. Loving the colour though! I’m not sure what to do about the colour of mine.
Seeing the ‘safety colour’ 912 today, got me wondering what colour mine should be.

I’m not a big fan of the Ossi blue (There is a reason why it’s rare perhaps?) but would like a stock, typically 70s colour.

I’m a big fan of tartan too… especially this Gulf inspired tartan for the seat inserts… maybe!


I picked up some tyre valves and got another layer of enamel on the wheels.




If they are dry enough, I might be able to get the tyres on today.

My uncle has a 73 911 in continental orange which is a fantastic colour - looks similar to the tangerine.
