Hey Grizz, what a window into a world clear around the planet from where I sit! Thanks for posting them up. BTW, even with cable, I stillhave to wait for an hour each page. Worth the wait though, I go play with the 733 while it's downloading.

Really, really enjoying this thread! As a kid I lived in SA from '67 to '71 in Randburg, about 12 miles north of Jo'berg on the N1 to Pretoria. Was the edge of the city then, my school in Bryanston backed onto the veld. Guess it must be 12miles from the edge by now!
Never really missed SA (apart from the weather), even though my best mate has property in Benoni and goes out to SA once a year, but reading this has really made me wan to go back and see how much the place has changed in the past 37 years (I know, a lot!).
Intrigued by the number plates too. My first car, a 105E Anglia export model sold new in Jo'berg, was brought back with us when we came home in 1971. Somewhere in the loft at my Mum's is the old plate of the Anglia - TRG 20549.
Looking forward to more photos!! :-)

Going to be a bit busy the next few days, so will upload when possible.
Numberplates in SA have an interesting history.
Originaly every city, town and village got their own reg prefix. So Johannesburg would be "TJ" Cape Town "CA" Durban "ND" and Bloemfontein "OB" the first letter denoted province ie: T= Transvaal, C=Cape Province, N= Natal and O=Orange Free State. Namibia used to form part of South Africa a long time ago, and they had a "S" prefix.
When the Transvaal started exhausting their Numbers after the prefixes, again TJ 999999, it was decided to switch the whole province to a Black on Yellow Alpha-Numeric plate with a "T" suffix, denoting the Transvaal Province. Other provinces that were less affluent did not switch at the time, and continued with White on Black plates, and over time they switched to Black on Yellow plates in old format.
When South Africa had its Democratic changes some years ago, there were suddenly 9 Provinces to contend with, so another change was made with Alpha-Numeric plates for some , like the greater Johannesburg, Pretoria, Witwatersrand area became known as Gauteng, which means Gold (Most of SA's gold comes from here) now the new number on a grey coloured plate with Blue writing, and a provincial badge in the middle, seperating the Provincial suffix "GP" for Gauteng Province became the standard, with all old style plates forced out of use by law. Other provinces all followed, some making their plates look like child art, with elephants, sunrises,Aloe Vera plants etc..... on different backgrounds, with different coloured lettering. Each province of the 9 now has a seperate Suffix....... ie: EC = Eastern Cape, ZN= Kwazulu-Natal. L= Limpopo Province , FS= Free State, and so on. The Western Cape has maintained the old prefix per town system, but mixed it with new personalised plates, the price determined by just how short you want it, and a "WP" suffix. Gauteng allows up to 7 characters on personal plates, with the "GP" suffix. The Eastern Cape Province where I am from , has an "EC" suffix, so if you do like I did for my one motorbike, and buy 444 HIT EC it can be read as 444 HITEC . Different provinces charge very different rates for the plates as well. My plate cost about £50.00 when I bought it, and a custom plate to read "RETRO 1 EC" will cost around £200.00 these days.
Hope this helps.

excellent thread, thank you! Mazda 323 seems a popular choice over there. Continued to be built as a "Sting" and "Midge" when the new 323 came online. Many car models continue, like the VW Golf Mk1 which is a Citi golf in various guises.

Alright, I am back for just a few minutes, I hope. Went from Oudtshoorn via George, and Sedgefield to Knysna, where we were spending Friday night with my mate Warwick at his place. Getting to Sedgefield, I saw an old car, as did Claire, and of course, then saw more..... so here are the pics I alluded to last night. If anyone wants to buy anything from or through them, use the details off the signboard. Randomly taken pics again, and to get price to ££'s, divide by 14-ish. Go check the website for all the details, and a well managed stocklist. Just about time for bed..... next up, some more nature, and a rusted Mk2 Golf by the sea.

That `37 is so tempting but too much money. Funny I know most of the garages round here but never seen this one in Sedgefield !

Just joking with the Sedgefield thing cos I`m in Co. Durham and Sedgefield is just down the road but that `37 looks very nice indeed. As stated earlier my `39 came from SA at some point. Was restored by a doctor in Joberg in the 70`s.

Saturday we went from Knysna to Port Elizabeth, via Storms River Mouth, which serves excellent breakfasts, and real ocean waves breaking on the coast, with glorious views of the ocean. It was also about 15 miles from the farm on which my dads family grew up on, and one of his favourite places to take guests to. Found this Non Rat, retro, patina, rare Golf Mk2 there as well. Reception desk, made of local indigenous wood. Jeffreys Bay..... World Famous for top surfing action. Also went to the Quicksilver and Billabong factory shops, as well as Country Feeling..... got great clothes as decent prices and bought a few (well, a lot ) stickers to be used somewhere in future. Got to Port Elizabeth, and had a birthday party to attend. Got Claire well pisssed ;D Sunday spent a lot of time on the beach, but also saw this..... Where we stayed with Antoinette, my friend since student days, we also had the boss of the house move into our bed..... KITTELS Ford Cortina Muscle Truck, 4x4 and V6 3.0 liter

Because of all my whoring with cars and things male and masculine, I was faced with a storm and tears, so the next day was committed totally to claires pleasure with shopping, and girly stuff as well as a visit to the Seaview Lion and game park. This game park turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip, as entry was only about £3 each, and to go into the living areas of the Lion cubs (6 months old) was another £4-ish, what a bargain. On top of it all, we saw a White lion getting all Jiggy with a lioness, and I will post a few pics of the rudeness. Note the camo in the trees.

They have a very successful breeding programme here for the White Lions, so it was a privelege to see not only the programme in Action, but also "Tula" who was 3weeks and 2 days old. Rounding her up ;D Getting down and dirty. After action, satisfaction. Raison d'etre..... Sooner than we realised it became time to hop onto the 1-Time jet again, and head for Johannesburg and few more days with my brother, who gave us his home to use, and moved in with his girlfriend. One seriously cool and generous guy, my brother , Deon. OFF to Bed now...... more later.
