In Speedster news the finishing touches for the new look have arrived so I just need to free up an hour or so to finish it off.
It has passed 20 years of age as of the 20th September and also has now become the 3rd longest I've ever held on to a vehicle. It's only beaten (and just by a few months) by the e30 325i 2dr I had from 2006-2009 and the Black Starlet which I've owned for over 11 years and is the only car from 42 that I have ever bought back after sale.

Not the most exciting pic but out and about yesterday. First to work, then collected a bike for my daughter (disassembled and in the passenger seat in this shot) and then a short stop in at my friend's place to check out his newly DIY renovated apartment and the Porsche Cayman he bought to replace his Speedster, Golf R and 3 big Motorbikes. Here parked next to that absolute Monster of a car that is the Focus Estate ;-)

To finish this look off I really want to try swapping it on to some steel wheels.
I like the idea of it on steels as well as I've never seen one on them before.
Any suggestions for a good place to look for new steels are welcome. I'm thinking of both the traditional multiple round hole steels and alternatively a D window, nascar style.
5*110 in 15's ideally as I'm very happy with the car dynamically and not keen to move larger diameter or width.

What about the Dunlop alloys that look like steels ? Especially in black ? Actual steel wheels feels a bit wrong ! James

I totally get your thinking and that's exactly the idea that I have in my head. The big BUT here is the price of those wheels.
I need to find a more cost-effective solution.

Lot of Opel spare wheels must be pretty close ? They can be pretty clean and tidy! Centre bore and offset are going to be the problem I suspect ? James

Vectra B spare wheels are 15' with a meaty tyre, incase there are any in breakers near you.

Thanks both. The Vectra B angle did lead me to what I want. 60 quid for the 4 rims. 👍

Really quite looking forward to seeing how this looks on steels. You going for silver colour wise?

Collecting the 86 tomorrow morning. I had to get my summer tires today so the first pieces of it are in my garage.

It's a bit of a tradition of mine to take on a big journey right at the start of car ownership. I don't do it for every car but for those that I've really wanted.
My first road car was a 1275 Mini that I collected from Leeds and drove back to Dublin via North Wales. The e30 325 I flew to London to collect it and immediately drove it back to Poznan where I was living at the time. The Black Starlet went straight into a 3 day Rally. My 911 SC went from London to Dublin via Scotland. The 840i went Dublin to the Alps and the Speedster headed straight to the Nürburgring from Zürich. You get the idea.
Given that I have been waiting for the 86 for 13 months and it's the first new car I've ever bought it was clear it needed a road trip too.
Now the 86 is not in the remit of retro rides but I think it is in spirit. It's the reason I bought it. It's NA, RWD, Manual and on a bespoke chassis. I think it's the end of the affordable sports car (MX-5 also of course but I need 4 seats) in Europe. In the UK you guys get an opportunity to still get kit based machinery but that's all but extinct in the rest of Europe.
Anyway, enough of my reasoning to buy the car. On to the trip. It's school holidays here, my wife and daughter have just jumped on a plane to go to Ireland for 6 days. My son is at soccer camp but finishes up this afternoon so we are pointing south and going to visit my uncle who lives in the South of France. It's 1000km door to door. Time to give the 86 a deserving first trip.
A thing I find weird is that the dealership says no run in for the engine and 1st oil change at 15,000km or 1 year. I'm going to ignore this in any case and keep it under 4k for the first 1000km. I was thinking 1st oil change at 5000km.
We set off about 16:30 this afternoon so pictures to follow.

Happy travels ! Ref running in I understand that it’s not revs so much as how hard you work things - so not full throttle basically. Also some engines need A bit of harder use early to avoid glazing bores or something (VW & high oil consumption rings a bell). Anyway agree on the oil change bit for sure too high for a first change or even normal changes. James
