Hello! New forum user so go easy... I've bought myself an LTI TX2 taxi, on eBay, unseen.... my wife laughed when I showed her the picture... This won't be a new car to many of you as I believe it has been previously owned by Paul ( Paul ), who then sold it to someone called Dave in Dudley, who I bought it from. I am loving being back in an unusual vehicle having owned a few sheds retro rides in the past Here's what it looked like when I picked it up last week (in storm Eunice....) I have a grand plan to drive it to a friend's wedding in Bergerac, calling in at Le Mans on the way down, and on the way home making a trip to the 'ring.... I've not had a silly adventure for a while so off I go....

Bookmarked.
Glad to see the old girl getting a new lease of life, warts and all.

It's been a busy little week for the taxi (not decided on a name for it yet) with the stereo being coaxed back into life (Kenwood protection mode anyone?) restoring entertainment to my pottering experience... changed a few bulbs, worked out why the horn wasn't very loud (pressed up against the bumper bar) which has turned my phhrrrr into a HONK. I emptied out the boot and checked over the spare.... The biggest win this week was discovering that a heater tube was blocking the travel of the accelerator pedal - instant performance boost! On the jobs list this weekend is fitting a new tophat seal to the roof (wet leg reduction) and fixing one of the fog lights. My neighbours must think I am nuts.

A busy few days with the taxi (name still not decided upon, 6YO thinks it should be called Basketball?) Changed the rear wash-wipe squirter for one that works, and put a brake pedal rubber on to help the brakes (it needs it!) The big job this weekend was a full peel of the purple and have a look what's underneath..... Before After I was planning on doing some other things this weekend like get the headlight restoration kicked off, but went to Skipton and ate sweets instead. It needs a tyre so that's booked in this week, and also going to a local trustworthy garage for a once-over......

Big update this week...First up, the not-very-exciting tyre replacement, the Kwik-Fit guy was a bit taken aback by the mileage, and when I told him about my trip to France he looked a bit shocked... great! From a distance, and through a slightly grubby customer waiting area window, and squinting slightly, it doesn't look too bad from here... In not so positive news I took the Taxi to my local trusted garage for an all over inspection... it wouldn't start and I ran the battery flat (glow plugs perhaps) so had to jump it off Mrs Horncastle's Polo. Down at the garage they did a hearty laugh and presented a list of stuff that "needed" doing, some of which I can do myself and thankfully I have time before I head off to France.... Euro car parts order placed and collecting on Friday to chip away at some of the jobs! (the estimated bill was £1400 ha ha ha ha ha)

Go on...what did they say she needed then?
Has it still got the voltmeter where the regular meter used to go? Helped me keep on top of chargeage as she could go 2-3 weeks without me driving her.

£1400 I'd a good effort! Nice to see another lease of life going into it!

There pretty simple things to work on & the parts are pretty cheap .
Maybe quoted you that high as there unfamiliar with it & didn’t really want to do the work ??

Well! I've taken the things off the list that I can do myself, so here's the stuff which I don't have the skills, patience, time or space for... Straighten n/s/f steel wheel using big hammer Replace Nearside rear (front to rear) brake pipe Adjust both front wheel bearings Remove and replace Nearside track rod end Front Wheel Alignment Remove and replace steering box Carry out radiator flush as appears to be blocked, clean timing cover at bottom Replace both front lower ball joint boots Remove and replace auxiliary belt to a/c one Carry out gearbox oil and filter change Oh and it's pretty rusty.... ...And it doesn't always start I did wonder if this was all worth the effort but I've already booked my ferry crossing, AA Euro breakdown cover etc!

What sort of total bar steward either 1) does this on purpose or 2) does it by accident but doesn't stop and leave a note?

The starting will be the glow plugs I'd bet your mortgage on it...once we hit warmer weather you'll forget all about it. Then you can either
a) Sell it like me b) Repeat the cycle when it gets cold at the end of 2022
The gearbox is a recon unit (if you get a chance to look underneath you'll see it's significantly shinier and less rusty than the rest of the taxi) so I'd be inclined to skip that - but you do you :-)
And I'd also wager that fitting the right aux belt to include the AC compressor will reveal that said AC compressor is FUBAR. Although the owner before me seemed to think it worked - he took it to a garage who 'only had the shorter belt' apparently. Hmmm...
I was told that the wheel bearings on a taxi are supposed to have a teeny bit of play - not sure how accurate that is.
Most parts are just old Transit bits surely?

Mirror seems all to common, I lost one on the Range Rover outside my house niece lost one on her 500 in a car park, nobody ever seems to bother stopping now. on the list unless it overheats I wouldn't tough the radiator, chances are it will leak when flushed out, what's the problem with the steering box, if it's just a little play I would also live with it, really just get the wheel (or fit the spare) brake pipe and suspension joints done.

I was tempted to skip the serpentine belt but then south of France in August suggests that I should give it a go.... I suppose I need to make a priority list and work out which things can hang on forever or until later in the year! I don't think glow plugs are a massive job but it does involve taking the exhaust manifold off I think...

paul is correct with the wheel bearing’s , should be play in them . If you take all the play out , they won’t last 5 minutes . The front to rear brake pipe is a definite weak point . What’s wrong with the steering box ? Leaking or play ? They can be adjusted if it’s play , but they should have a bit of play & most of them weep a little oil . 👍

What’s wrong with the steering box ? Leaking or play ? It's both, according to the garage, and to be fair there is about 5cm of movement in the steering wheel before anything happens... Might just leave it!

I love a good weekend of tinkering.... a LOT of jobs got ticked off the list, and I only blew one 20A fuse.. First up was my maiden attempt at headlight improvement (not going to call it restoration) Before After Front after I did the n/s with a drill attachment (in the kit) and the o/s by hand, and the o/s came out far better, that's a lesson for next time! Next up was fitting a cowl to the voltmeter, it's a really handy dial but a bit bright at night so the cowl helps with that. Put a cheeky bead of sealant around the top hat to stop the internal rain "feature"... of course it started to snow the second I had applied it... Then Sunday came some more electrical fleffings, starting with getting both foglights working (just some cheeky wires making an escape) Tried to work out this wiring set up, I think it was a sub woofer/pass through thing but I just want the rear speakers to work... more tinkering needed here.. Final job of the weekend was trying (emphasis on that word) to fit a USB where the 12v socket was... I blew a fuse (literally and figuratively) trying to do it, then dumbass here realised there's one coming out of the back of the radio.... toolbox packed up and deep breaths ensued.... I've now ticked 30 jobs off my to-do list!

It sounds like a reasonable old car to have and keep.
I do find that lights like hand polishing, have done quite a few.
The other stuff….. I would probably give some a go and some a miss.
Good luck, keep having fun and keep the faith.
