Update AKA the wallet-emptier one...
Now payday has been and gone, I've ordered a SHEDload of stuff from various places, and I've made my mind up about the glowplugs... I'm going to do them! Until of course they're all seized in, but I'll get some penetrating oil for that (ooer).
When I was servicing old Citroen 2cv's oil used to be £10.... for this blasted taxi it's properly expensive stuff!

https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cd3LSMzPRBC Excuse the massive amounts of bum crack in this video, got my oil change and filter done (made a mess of the drive...). The trolley jack I bought in 1997 still works a treat but I'm not sure how solid the mounts are underneath! Next up this week is radiator flush and re-fill with red stuff.

One of my wheel trims flew off yesterday (it was returned by a very kind person) but it got me thinking, would it look better without them? Got my stanley knife out.... thoughts? If money was no option I'd love a set of these...

I cleaned the wheels with degreaser stuff this weekend and they're back to paint/rust now so am looking at paint options... or just leave it for rat-look. Not sure yet!

This weekend was a job I was dreading a bit, but as with a lot of things in life it turned out to be better than imagined.. cooling system flush and refill!
Once the plastic plug was out (and I had old anti-freeze running down my arms before I got the catch-pan in place) I took some hoses off, radiator cap etc and flushed the rad and the engine block out. My love of things being CLEAN was a bit scuppered by the header tank which has a bit of crud inside it, and no amount of soaking and shaking could get it all out. It's a bit better... I've seen videos of people filling them with grit and shaking them for an hour but my patience won't allow for that...
The bottom radiator hose wouldn't come off so I left that in place (didn't want to make more problems for myself!)..
Once everything was flushed multiple times I tightened everything up and refilled with de-ionised water and red anti-freeze stuff, ran the engine, heaters on full blast, topped it up, waited, filled to max fill line... bosh!
Giving it a test run today, got 5 litres of pre-mixed coolant with me just in case...
Next big job is glow plugs, and while the EGR is off I am going to clean that up too.

Anyone got any practical tips on how to diagnose a fog light circuit problem? I know it's not the bulb as the spare bulb doesn't work either, and it's not the switch because the D/S foglight works okay... I have a multimeter....

Are both not working or just one? Simplest thing to do in the first instance is take your multimeter, set it to volts, identify your +ve wire, connect the red prong to that and the black to a suitable earthing point (loads around the engine bay) and see if there's a reading with the fog lights on. As I recall the wiring up the front for those fogs was pretty crusty and I had to cut some back and resolder in some new wire for them to work. I doubt a couple of years in blighty's weather have helped the corrosion 🤣🤣🤣

There's only one fuse in the "glovebox" for the fogs and that's fine. Where was the solder located, is it reachable with my chubby arms?

Ah, in a way that's kind of reassuring - my 'repairs' were to the driver's side 🤣🤣🤣 Best bet is to get underneath and have a look at the wiring as above. Plenty of space even without a jack and the wheel turned out.

Some good, and some not so good... let's start with the GOODHooked it up to ForsCan and that in itself feels like a WIN, got loads of extra information and can make natty little custom dashboards with it. Yes, I might be 10 years behind everyone else... In the NOT SO GOOD news category we have the following error codes from ForScan... EGR valve I am cool with cos' I'm going to clean that when I do the glow plugs, but the Fuel timing thing is likely to be the fuel pump solenoid and they are 1) Expensive 2) a PITB to swap out. IN OTHER not so good news, I can't get the N/S/F foglight work at all, no power to the wiring near the bulb, any one good with car electrics in North Yorks? Cos I am not.

Good pointer thanks - it's going to a taxi specialist in Liverpool very soon (to get some of the jobs I can't do on the drive sorted) so will ask them to have a look. In other news I've ordered a new wiring loom for the front foglight, and if that doesn't work I'll be taking the foglights off it and replacing them with blanking plates

Big ol' busy Sunday boxing off an epic bumper mega few jobs including (cue ominous music) GLOW PLUGSI was absolutely dreading doing this, but prep is key so went and got myself a deep 10mm socket, a mega extension bar thingy, some copaslip and a big dose of courage.
Once the battery is off, the EGR is off, the exhaust manifold is off, and the header tank moved out of the way (!) it was pretty easy to get access to the plugs. Thankfully none were seized in, and the ones I've just replaced them with have copaslip on them... will the Taxi live long enough to see another glow plug change? Who knows...
Anyway, the EGR was disgusting and the valve side was completely coked so that got Mr Muscle-d while I worked. I dropped many many sockets and extension bars inside the engine bay so had to jack the car up to retrieve a few, gaffa taped stopped that mistake!
Once I'd got the EGR clean with various brushes I freed up the valve and rebuilt everything taking care to make sure nothing was cross-threaded.. I was heading off to do a test run and discovered the brakes didn't work..... I'd knocked a pipe of the vacuum pump, phew...
Seeing as the weather was nice I used a de-carbonising brush on the wheels, wiped them down with white spirit and then painted them in hammerite smooth black. Not a bad result!
The last job I can realistically do myself is the fog light, and the loom for that is in the post off t'Ebay. After that we're off to a place in Liverpool that specialises in Taxis so they can do the last remaining few things before the big trip in August..
If anyone uses instagram I am posting silly updates over at @bangertobergerac

Anyone in the Harrogate area with a TX1 in the same colour? Saw a Y-reg one last night with a bonnet scoop on it and rat-look paint (in place) curiously near to my house....

Fog light problem found, and a £7 wiring set off t'Ebay sorted it within a few minutes (one of the connector pins was squished, if that bit of information interests you). They now shine like they should, although how effective they'd be in poor weather remains to be seen... Next up was a quick wash and did tyre-dressing, I think the wheels look pretty good in black with shiny tyres. I've now done all of the things I can do on the drive, so next week the taxi is going to Stanley Auto Engineers in Liverpool to have the remaining jobs done... it's a bit of a drive from North Yorkshire but I want it to be done by a company who really know Taxis... it's about 50 days until I set off for Bergerac!

Whack a mole. n/s/f indicator only works intermittently, must be some sort of dirty connection.... EGR valve is goosed (the OBDII reader app and thingy is already useful); when the engine is up to full operating temperature after an hour on the motorway, the EGR hasn't budged a bit... new one ordered off t'Ebay... normally I wouldn't bother but it's throwing a code and potentially putting the engine in reduced fuelling mode and I need all the BHP I can get!! In other less dry news I've ordered some stereo bits to 1) connect the microphone back up for handsfree and 2) connect the rear speakers up
