That would fit quite a few cars 140 Gph a bit steep, but should be a lot of fun [/quote] Doing a quick calculation: from RAC website, Diesel £176.58/litre (assuming diesel closest to kerosine but petrol is a similar price) x 4.54 = 801.67 Say £8 per gallon So 140 Gph * £8 = £1120 per hour.

Maybe it's heresay, but I thought turbines were supposed to run on almost anything? Just fuel oil maybe?

Fuel oil 88p litre x 4.54 * 140 = £559 per hour. Perhaps waste vegetable oil

surely those figures are based on the engine lifting a helicopter in the air, propelling a vehicle would be far less load so it should use far less fuel.

Yes I don't think you will be able to use 1500shp for long in any car!

Maybe it's heresay, but I thought turbines were supposed to run on almost anything? They certainly do. If it can support combustion then it will run a turbine BUT you really want it clean burning and easily atomizable. Commercial diesel is a bit 'wet', JET A-1 perfect, straight kero good, 28 sec heating oil good, chip fat biodiesel not so good, propane good. What you don't want is to be compressor washing every 10 hours. surely those figures are based on the engine lifting a helicopter in the air, propelling a vehicle would be far less load so it should use far less fuel. Yessssss but the compressor load can be 66% of the total turbine power and about 40 percent of the air leaving the compressor will be needed in the cooling process between the outer casing and the combustion can. Off load it will be more economical but not as we would see it in an IC engine. Also 'tickover' might be between 24-32k rpm. One of the first jobs is to work out what 'tickover' is on my one.

So hydrogen? Would be lovely to zip around the ULEZ sounding like the batmobile and spitting flames yet not being on the hook for £12.50 a day or whatever it is.

Due to temperatures involved nitrous oxide is a problem. This can be reduced with water/steam injection to reduce combustion temps but then power is reduced. ULEZ should not be a worry as it's over 40 years old.

When you're waiting for parts, with some lead times in months, you can't have a linear build so with no 4WD chassis yet, no drop box and no donor car you start on the bits that you can plan and hopefully build. Still waiting for the mil-spec connector for the fuel system so we can have some noise tests and consider exhaust plumbing, attenuators and even a simple recuperator you get round to considering some sort of statement exhaust pipe. The joy of a clean sheet on a weird build is that you only have to please yourself/your budget and and in this case worry if Joe Public will reckon you're compensating for a lack of something in the trouser department. Exhaust cannot be smaller in area than 170 x 230mm IIRC otherwise you'll get back pressure and that's not good turbine practice. Add the complications of bends and possible attenuators and ideally it should be bigger than that. A bucket sized hole coming out the rear panel is too boring so I had a nose round my fav aviation surplus dealers and look what I found Lynx IRCM Mixing Engine Exhaust Nozzle - draws cold air through the outer skins so the y are relatively cool. That's a real bit of metal sculpture and will give a bit of a lift in what would be a boring back end.

...and in this case worry if Joe Public will reckon you're compensating for a lack of something in the trouser department. This is hysterical: just understated self deprecating eloquence. Bravo. ...and will give a bit of a lift in what would be a boring back end. Indeed. I often find myself worrying that a 40 year old 4wd converted 2cv with a gas turbine crammed into the back of it might be a little understated in it's derriere. I'm pleased you've addressed this gravest of concerns. I loved the goddess thread, the healey is brilliant, and this just further elevates you in my books. Great writing.

Those also have the effect of quietening the exhaust down.
Slightly.

Found this on the Tube of You. A Dax Rush. Don't know how long ago it was or whether it ever went on the road/track but it certainly had potential... PS You've been bookmarked

PS You've been bookmarked I'd forgotten about this one. Gary from Dax said "the turbine is out of a bell jetranger but i got a problem with it now the quaif revers gear box seized up when i was test runing it on axle stands and bent the power fan , i been looking for another one but had no luck yet , its one of them projects i wished i never started," Prophetic words? Let's hope not
