Hi, These come from the states, so my question would be. Are these MOT compliant in regards to light pattern? Or do we have to keep changing them MOT time? Does anyone know?

I had a similar set in my mini truck…whilst they were bright, there was no beam pattern and they weren’t even close to MOT compliant

I've seen a few fitted to old defenders and they're shockingly dazzling.

The cheap ones also don't have a heater in them. One of the benefits of the older incandescent lights is that they generate heat to melt away ice etc.

Somewhere in my fuddled mind, I seem to remember that new MOT rules had some covenant regarding LED retro fits, might be worth checking out....

I've looked into these multiple times over the years and have formed a solid personal perspective.
1 - I'm always concerned with the quality of the beam pattern. Anything tested with evidence is very expensive. Sometimes you can find Australian versions of American branded stuff which has been tested, which is useful.
2 - it might be because I do the RBRR (2k miles in 48 hours) which causes me to prefer preparation for quick fixes in remote places with no phone signal or lighting. I've had both headlights fail and it's not pleasant! Having H4 bulbs as spares to get going again is nice. Otherwise you're back to having a full headlamp unit in your boot as a spare just like sealed beam days.
3 - if one does fail or ends up with a stone going through it then you've got to buy a pair of expressive units, if they're still available as fashions change.
For the above I've always gone with new good lamp units and proven (evidenced by video reviews normally) bulbs. I've thrown the original bulbs in the boot as spares.
I still want the snazzy LED lamp units though, but I can't justify them. 🤣

I'm with ferny here. IMHO, Halogens can be good, but the equipment has to be in good condition, and working right. If it were me, I'd do the following, in this order. -Get some good bulbs in. Osram Nightbreakers are great and give out alot of light. Ring's offerings are also good. -If the headlamp system isn't on a relay, put a relay in. Your headlight switch will live for longer and you'll have more power at your headlights. For your car, a retrofit kit may be available to simplify matters here. I know they do for Triumph Stags for example -Get some good headlamps. Not ones from which eBay vendors tell you are good, or guys who fitted the clear lens items, and compared them to 50 year old rotted out Carello units. No. Something with a good backing. IMHO, there is only one company here. Valeo, who now own Cibie. Getting Cibies from classic car vendors can be pricey. However, Type in Valeo headlamp into eBay, and a car which shares the same headlight size as yours should get you a pair for headlights for below £120 for the pair. Pricey I know to some, but cheap for a legal, non-dazzling, and effective headlight upgrade. They also look proper and good too. On the W108, I did the Valeo headlights and the Nightbreaker bulbs. My mates who own cars with HIDs were impressed at how good the lights were 'for an old car'. forum.retro-rides.org/post/2488742/threadAbove is my thread about the headlights

Relays relays and relays. Plus a decent cable direct from battery/alternator and remember to run a same size negative/earth cable back to the battery. Never rely on the car body for a battery return especially on old cars or cars with separate chassis.

Have been looking at Led lamps for one of my projects, think there is a lot of sketchy product out there.
However Car Builder Solutions list both 7" & 5.75" units(not all have Angel eyes) and there was another source on Ebay claiming E-Marked RHD lights as well.. neither option are cheapest but in theory should be compliant/legal.

Never rely on the car body for a battery return especially on old cars or cars with separate chassis. Depends on the lens too. It’s a combination of the lot which works IMHO. The mirrors in my Autopal lights in the Stag were horrendous. The next owner put in relays and was still disappointed. He went to a Cibies and he was finally pretty happy. He was an a very known Porsche/Holden specialist in addition to being in the Triumph scene for decades. Oddly, the mirrors in the Autopal lights on my Carina were much better. It seems quality control was poor there. In a friend’s relayed Skyline, the headlamps were horrific. His mirror/reflectors had deteriorated very badly. He zinc plated them but they did not improve much. A proper refurb was out of the question due to the costs involved (I think £800 was the number, as what happened to the Dino on Salvage Hunters Classic Cars).

American lights don't now have the kick-up to one side anymore. Modern US lamps have a flat pattern - which passes IVA and MOT. Meaning I could leave the standard lamps in my Dodge
