So, after driving the car for a short time, I noticed the speedometer isn't working. I'm guessing it needs a new speedometer cable, but was wondering whether anyone has any differing opinions, such as a blown fuse etc.
Also, minor issue but the washer fluid isn't working. I'm guessing that the washer pump is broken, but again thought would mention in case anyone knows if something simpler may be causing the issue. To be clear, I can't hear the sound of the washer pump, it's not something as simple as clogged nozzle unfortunately.
Cheers.

Hi, I would buy a serious can of (electric) contact spray and some fine sanding paper. Take out all fuses you can find one by one and clean them. Do the same with all electric connectors and earth points. Will save you a lot of weird trouble. Thom

Speedometer is electronic. Probably the speedo head faulty. datman I hope you don't mind me asking, but I feel like you're pretty knowledgeable when it comes to Nissan Laurels. Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth spending the money to get the speedometer fixed and then getting it MOT'd or whether it would be better to just sell as is currently. Essentially, what do you think it could be worth if I were to sell it as is with the not-working speedometer, vs if it was all working with a valid MOT. The car has around 23,000 miles and is a 1987 2.4 SGX C32, body work in good condition with some minor rust spots, most of which will come off with something like T-Cut. I understand this is a bit vague, I'm more just trying to gauge a ball park figure/range. I've tried doing research but it all seems a bit conflicting.
Really appreciate any help, just don't want to spend too much money for almost no reason.
Thanks.

Got a pic? Manual or auto? Shouldn't need speedo working to pass MOT, I don't think they test it. Worth replacing speedo if you can find a cheap one. 23K sounds pretty amazing. I have owned probably 4 or 5 of these, and more of the previous models.

Hi, I have a speedo cluster for that, give me a call 07919310017, I also have the factory workshop manual and can easily help you with that. I have four of those cars laying around somewhere.

how will they know if the speedo works or not though, they never drive the car. I have never heard of a car actually failing an MOT on the speedometer not working.

Hi, ISTR reading either here or elsewhere that it's a visual inspection ie. is it present, is the trip reading different from the last time, does it 'twitch' on the brake rollers? They can't or don't test it specifically unless they do a road test as said. I would think that they would advise it to show they have noticed, to cover their back.

Ok so after taking for a short drive in our close, it turns out I was being stupid and was just not going fast enough to actually see the speedometer working, partly because I was being cautious as it's technically sorn with no insurance, but we were just driving it, literally, round the corner from my grandparents house to ours. Didn't help that I was going a constant low speed. Anyway, at least that's some good news 😂. Either that or I did give it a little tap, though I'm leaning to me just being stupid.
It's an auto and yeah, 23k is pretty great for the age of the car.
You definitely have experience with these cars then!

When we phoned the garage about getting it in for an inspection and potentially an MOT, he said that it doesn't need the speedo to work for it to pass. I agree it's odd, and I'm confused by the screenshot but that's what the guy from the garage said

I agree it's odd, and I'm confused by the screenshot but that's what the guy from the garage said The screenshots are from the government testing manual. If they are fine passing it then winner. Realistically given the car isn’t road tested, it’s unlikely it would even be spotted. When I say all the information is in the screen shot. There is no more info given, you can read the manual yourself, just Google MOT Test manual and use the gov.uk linked one. That’s the one.

I agree from the screenshot/gov website I would assume you would need it working, plus just from if I had to guess you would assume it would be a thing they require. But I just thought I'd let you know what the garage said as well, more out of interest; whether or not they're right I don't know. Thankfully its a non-issue now seeing as they speedometer is actually working 😂
