Been really fancying a Volksrod recently. Nothing too radical though. Ideally one done that needs a make over but there are some awful ones about. Very much leaning towards the un-chopped ones. Thoughts? Please add your own slant to it

A big fan of volksrods .
Definitely something I’d like to build one day .
There’s definitely a lot of skill in making a chopped one look good .
👍

I brought this of the bay Which now looks like this to be fair it was advertised as an on going project that had taken the bloke i think 8 years to get to the green stage, It still needed lights wiring brake pipes sorting the engine wouldn't run and numerous other things i cant remember i have no bad feelings toward the seller as i brought it unseen BUT i really do wish he had mentioned there was no fan fitted inside the dog house it was only a 1.2 so was i always going to change the engine its now a 1641 but it took me no end of time and effort finding out there was no fan. Also it was hand painted with proper army paint which didnt want to come off easily so i rushed it and painted it which looks better but still not good and as bad as it looked in hand painted green at least i could say i didnt do it now it looks bad and i did it so will be re doing as soon as i can. so far then new engine full respray new brake pipes new front beam and beam extender new lights and wiring, jobs to do re paint so its smoother and shiny and a good stereo although no stereo saved me and my daughter on a test run we could hear a noise of metal bells chinging ? so stopped to investigate turns out it was the centre cap of the rear wheel which was about to fall of as the bolts were loose 3 very loose one missing so if we had a stereo we wouldnt have heard it and would have lost a wheel.

How do they get the front wheels so far forward - fit the torsion bar beam t'other way around or summat? They use a beam extender 👍

This is Rodbuster imported from America in the early 90's. On display at the Sheffield arena if I remember right. Helped lift the roof on and off with the guy that owned it. I was there with Andy Parrott who built the Trophy Trap Beetle also being shown at the same show.

I had to hunt for the beam extender it took me ages to get one it looks the same as the one above eventually i found a bloke in wolverhampton who made one for me i do still have his details if needed but although that is a bolt on replacement remember you will also need longer brake pipes and steering column which also caused me much head scratching.

Also my beam extender is the same as the one above which has a 3 inch suspension drop built in.

Here is a german bug called the roach, done by someone nicknamed der flexer (the grinder) who did several famous vw customs in the 80/90s.
Not sure if it' can be called a volksrod, if the wheelbase hasn't changed ?

The two I remember from years ago are
the Ratcatcher , bare metal finish seems to ring a bell
and
Dr Gonzo ( or Gonzo ) originally blue then reworked and became Gonzoline in white
I'll see if I can find any pics
