Is there a suitable automatic gearbox (ideally not ecu-controlled) for a rwd conversion using a Ford Zetec or Vauxhall 16V engine? And are all Zetecs the same regarding the gearbox mountings?

Does it have to be a Zetec or Vauxhall 16v? MX5s were available in auto flavour and could do the same job? Plus you've got the whole package that you know works together.

It could be Mazda but I think the engine'll be too wide for my application ie. 1958 Bedford CA van. It must have an automatic box so that is the main priority to overcome. Regardless of engine type, I will be very tight for space and will probably be looking at modifying the exhaust to bring it in closer and probably looking at downdraught carburettors. I would prefer to use a Vauxhall if possible as it keeps it in the 'Bedford family', which I'd like to do.

Wheeler Dealers did a Pinto with an auto box in a Bedford recently, which was tight (and very heavy) so if I'm going to do it then I'd want to do it with an engine set-up that isn't already obselete

The inlet manifold on the mx5 is a bit of a lump but the actual engine isn't much wider than any other twincam.
For the Zetec you would be looking at something RWD Ford, a sierra or scorpio pinto autobox should bolt up to the engine no idea about the flex plate though, I think the earlier (A4LD?)ones were all hydraulic too.

Omega auto from the V6 petrol or later ecotec 16v work on the c20xe but i think they would have an ecu, not 100%sure though.
Manta 1800 autobox would fit the job, bolts to the XE as the 1800 was the 8v of that engine and no ecu. But finding one could be tricky.

Retroford do a bellhousing adaptor plate to mount the mx5 manual box to a ford so should also work for the auto version

MK3 Carlton 2.0 petrol would be a good box, they are ECU controlled but its a standalone ECU so pretty simple
