Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause for this? I bought a Mito last week and seller didn't tell me it was smokey until I noticed halfway through my homeward journey.
I'm getting heavy white smoke under load - I originally thought it was coolant, but it's not overheating, and I've narrowed down the first common problems by blanking off the EGR and the EGR cooler (don't need any advice on whether they should be or not, it's just a test).
I'm getting a lot of water dripping from the exhaust as well as 'fragrant' white smoke from start up, made even worse by flooring the throttle pedal. I have a fault code for the EGR, and I've done a DPF regeneration, which completed OK (but with the same amount of white smoke obviously).

Hi, It could be water ingestion from HGF or faulty injectors.

Did it actually do a regen as most wont with an egr fault, they use egr to regulate exhaust temps.
Does it have 5th injector in the exhaust?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks or boost leaks? White/grey smoke is usually diesel coming through unburnt, is the exhaust pipe overly dirty? It should be relatively clean on a modern derv.

What style tailpipe does it have on it? Seen this before on a engine I did where the car wash he took it to for a valet afterwards had blasted a load of water up the exhaust pipe and soaked the rear silencer. We nearly took the engine back out but there were no other symptoms. Took about 10 days of me taking it to work and back (34 mile motorway each way) before it cleared.

I don't know if it has a fifth injector? I'm pretty sure there are no vacuum/boost leaks - the smoke is quite intense, and I've seen vacuum leaks on a diesel before and it's not as bad as this. It's not water going in through washing. I've run it for about 30 minutes and I'm having tunnel vision over whether it's getting worse or not.
I put some steel seal in because I've run out of options and it smoked less on idle, but as soon as I held the pedal down, it was smoke city. I don't know whether it's just clearing itself out or not (see video below)
It was a private sale (Facebook marketplace of course).

This was it a few days ago, although I do think it has calmed down since then. It's frustrating as I told the seller I was desperate for a working car as well. Ugh.

This was it cold after I put the Steel Seal in: This was it about 20 minutes later idling: Took it outside the garage and gave it some pedal - water dropping out onto floor. It's terrible as soon as you press the pedal and then it starts smoking.

Might be a daft question but is it definitely water and not diesel?

I can't tell, it doesn't stay in the air, and evaporates, but there's a strong smell of diesel. The drips on the floor are 100% water, I've done a quick taste of it.

If it’s water it’ll take forever to burn away . Diesel exhaust’s don’t get anywhere near as hot as petrol ones .

You've more than likely got a defective injector, it'll either be hosing and not atomising the fuel or leaking resulting in over fuelling and the white pungent smoke.

I'm thinking that - I might just try unplugging each one as the first step. It's hard with having water/diesel in the ehxuast system/intercooler as it never burns off as said. It took my BMW a couple of days to clear out a leaking turbo seal after replacing.

I had similar, although not quite so bad on the Jag. Injectors were leaking so injecting double what they should do at whatever target rpm they measure at. I gather they were a little worn, but the chappy had seen worse.
The exhaust smelt like an old diesel generator (usually run pretty inefficiently so chuck out diesel). It'd drive along without smoke, but flooring it left a cloud of white. As did pulling away from traffic lights after sitting there for a while allowing the excess diesel at idle to pool up.

My friend is using his injector tester tomorrow, I think it feeds off the leak off pipe or something.

This looks very very injector related.
how did you get on with the tester?

The PCV valve was chucking out white steam - it plugs straight into the air pipe into the turbo and if I disconnected this, no more white smoke from exhaust. No idea why, blow by or something on the pistons??
There were chunks of radweld in the cooling system that was blocking any coolant/water flow and it overheated with white smoke at one point.
I gave up in the end and took it out and put another engine in there.
Unfortunately, the new engine was also knackered so I'm on the look-out for another one cheap.
How I have not just broken this heap up and sold the best bits obviously hasn't dawned on me yet. You take the front end off these Mitos, disconnect the exhaust, unplug about two connectors in the engine bay and diesel pipes and it drops out after unbolting the two mounts - it takes about half an hour. It's lucky as I've taken it in and out about five or six times so far.

seeing as you have an engine out already, and its not completely shat itself, why not stick a headgasket on it?

What would cause that white smoke from the crank vent pipe though - it looks like it's pressurising and pumping out whatever it is. I thought it was something else, but as soon as I disconnected this pipe from the intake system I didn't get smoke from the exhaust, gah!
