Riding round on the bar stool racer was one of the highlights of the weekend. Really tempted to build something of my own now, just not sure whether to buy a go kart as a basis to chop up or start from scratch.

What are the issues you've got to sort before the gathering?

As we didnt get to give it a proper test before Goodwood it soon became apparent that after bouncing round a field that tbe fuel tank needed a more secure mount and the brake took abit too much effort to make it stop.
The gearing is something I might change as it didn't get to top speed with the ground being so bumpy and I do t want to burn the clutch out
Although the engine didn't overheat, I've decided to install a couple of fans to help keep it cooler, especially when idling.
The main issue was that after a running it for a bit it just stopped and would t start again. After some fiddling and investigation it was clear the pulse pump wasnt supplying fuel to the carb and needed further looking at.
I've taken the engine out and the pulse pump looks good and I'm getting a pulse from the engine when cranking. I've even bench tested the pulse pump and it works fine. I'm fairly sure the fuel line from tbe tank to the pulse pump must have been pulled tight and kinked with the tank bouncing around so securing the tank better and rerouting the fuel line should hopefully sort it

It's been a few weeks since RRW and I've made some progress on resolving the small issues on the ammo box racer. The first job was to strip it down to get to everything buried inside, surprisingly it didn't take as long as I thought it would  The fueling issue looks like it was a kink in the fuel pipe due to the fuel tank bouncing around, so the tank mount has been improved and the fuel pipe swapped for a slightly larger size with better routing with a bit more slack Although the engine didn't overheat heat it did get a bit warm inside so to improve things I've decided to fit some cooling fans that'll push the warm air out under the seat. This meant cutting out the existing cooling holes and replating the lid to suit the new 12v fans   Still need to sort the brake control and make the steering less sensitive so more to come...... |

A quick update on progress The pulse pump is back in and reconnected to the more secure fuel tank  The arms for the brake and accelerator cables have been shortened so there is more leverage, hopefully you won't have to squeeze quite so hard on the brake now and will be able to stop! The steering felt a bit twitchy so I've adjusted the arms on the front axles. This was the first attempt that made it less sensitive but didn't have much of a turning angle  And here is the last and final attempt  Although it doesn't look massively different, I've discovered small changes seem to make a huge difference with steering. I've also left the original holes in just in case the test drive goes tits up  Just need to squeeze the engine back in and connect up the controls and she should be ready to |

So the ammo box is back together and we took it out for a test run, needless to say it was more than quick enough! Given I'll be driving it round a campsite I figured it would be best to gear it down, I've also got something else up my sleeve that I need to slow it down for as well. Time to get making a jackshaft. Unfortunately as it uses kart parts I'm limited to sprockets that suit a 219 chain which doesn't give me much choice so I've had to be creative  All the pretty machined parts  Just need to weld it up, make a bracket, shortened chains, strip it down, fit everything....... Hopefully I'll get it done it time! |

Regarding the twitchy steering, I had the same problem when I built my sons jeep  Then I found out about Ackerman steering ! basically you draw lines from the centre of the back axle to the front kingpin pivot point, the steering link is set to the angle of the line. The other thing that helped was putting a couple of degrees of Castor on the front kingpins. |

We did look at the Ackerman principle and had mixed results. Due to the position of my steering column it hasn't been an exact science. The distance of the pivots for the links arms relative to the pivot points on both the hubs and steering column plays a big part in the steering sensitivity.
I've modified the link arm position on the hubs and to seems to be alot better now

Quick update, the priority was to get the jackshaft done finished and fitted  First job, get it welded together  Doesn't look too bad  I machined a shaft for it and quickly made a bracket to mount it  Chain all fitted  I've got some wiring modifications to do now I've fitted a second charging coil. A few more things to wrap up and it should be good, including a special add on for it...... |

I've modified the link arm position on the hubs and to seems to be alot better now I was the same, a fair bit of trial and error. Adding caster seemed to help a lot as it introduces a self centring action and seems to make it more stable in a straight line. Looks pretty stable in your video  |
