I too thought being a "Private Ambulance Driver" might be a good thing to do, picking up dead people from wherever to take to the mort/undertakers, sadly its just not that simple and some ads I have seen say you might have to handle a dead person [dead weight!] by yourself and the circumstances of that get worse the more you think about it. I think most are employed by the undertakers as one of their duties in the funeral process, so you'd likely be lifting and shifting whilst looking sombre at funerals too. Always had the greatest respect for the guys doing the retrievals, no need to go into details but not everyone dies in bed, and that can create some interesting moving and handling challenges, whilst also being around grieving relatives which generates a pressure of its own.

Add into that the "sudden deaths" that are not discovered for weeks, and it's a no from me... As stated, huge respect for those that do, but having never seen a corpse in the flesh (sorry), I am not sure how I would react. My friend is a Police Officer and he was surprised at some in his training group who were terrified or couldn't deal with the smell. He has no issues and is often called on to deal at first discovery. Not sure I could!

One of my cousins is a policeman here in NZ. He has been a member of the serious crash squad for too long and has been seriously affected by some of the things he has seen.

Paramedic amongst other things for the last 25 years here. It does build up over time, I wouldn't put the RTC's up there as the most horrific jobs but we are all different.
