I just picked up a random copy of Retro Cars and decided to see how many cars I could see inside on minilites.
I stopped counting at 40 and didn't even bother with the classifieds.
Why does nearly everyone throw a set of MLs on their retro car? Personally, I don't think they look that great and the look has been done to death.
I prefer to see something a bit more interesting...Like the red mkI Astra running a twincam from that astra/mini/anglia twincam shoot a while back - nice pair of white Compomotive MOs.
What do you guys think?

I think they're quite a flexible design - they suit a lot of different cars. Especially BL motors I reckon. Personally I prefer a set of Wolfrace alloys, but it depends on the car. I don't dislike them, but they are a bit too widely used for my tastes.

Same here, sure they look alright on any car and are widely available, but the looks been overdone, and there are are lots of other retro wheels you could use, revolutions, steelies of various kinds, there are plenty to choose from, compomotives, I mean Minilites are nice but you lose some of the effect if you turn up at a show and pull up next to thrity odd other cars, all wearing the same alloys that you just forked out on, your money would be as well spent on something unusual.

i think youre fired for bringing up the subject seriously i think its been done to death anything old and british seem to have them but why not - most modern alloys just don't look right on an old car

I know that but as I said there are other wheels that an old British car could be wearing, and some of them are retro as well, I wouldn't advise any curse word modern 'bling' jobs like the ones that chavs stick on modern 'modified' cars, on an older car, that would just be a bloody atrocity! On the other hand, there are a few simple modern designs that can just about work on an older car, that little light blue Audi someone put pics up of on here a while back was quite nice on Audi A3 rims, you know the alloys with the little holes in like Weller motorsports wheels?

i will have to agree here, i think as a wheel there ok but its really pisses me off when people put the on cars where other and better wheels are avalible. for example when i was deep in the triumph scene, at show theres was loads of sprints with them on,but why use them when you can use the sprint rim? i have noticed this with alot of other cars to. theres a chap at work with a spitfiire who had minilites on for a while but he then put slot mags on which finished it off perfect. I'm not sure if that makes sence but what it means is why put them on when theres better wheels avalible? its like the easy way out of finding a wheel but at the end of the day, if you have just spent a few grand restoring your motor you don't want a set of minilites taking the spotlight over something different

A mate keeps pestering me to get a set for mine but apart from the fact I ain't got the cash spare, I personally only like them nice & wide with a huge dish 7" plus wide ..Trouble is, with the height mines running I'm 99% certain that 7"'s won't fit, so it's 6"'s which look worse than what I have now IMO!!!!! You're right in that they are very popular but as said there are lots of better wheels/alloys avaliable. If I were to change the wheels on mine I think I would look into a set of twin-cam steels or maybe Revo's.

Have any of you tried to purchase a set of new retro wheels recently? I really wanted a set of Alley Cats for my Lotus Sunbeam but they arent available anymore, neither are any of the other retro style wheels EXCEPT for minilite style. Maybe this is why the minilite style is so popular? For myself I bit the bullet and bought a set of 4spoke revolutions. 8x13 for the front and 10x13 for the back. Now I cant find any tyres big enough for the back wheels (which had to be made special order). OK rant over.

Autojumbles are always a good place to find old wheels, I almost bought a full set of Weller eight spokes as spares for my Imp project at the show/autojumble at Balado airstrip last year (since I plan on a bit of rallying it could do with spares) but they were a bit dear, and an inch narrower than mine anyway. But that's not the point, you can still get some geniune old wheels there, I spotted a hell of a lot of Ford wheels and wire wheels there, and some nice revolution four spokes as well, and there are beter autojumbles than that one for wheels and the like, as long as you don't mind buying wheels secondhand, I don't mind but I do check their condition carefully when I do, but that's common sense really. Plus a number of companies still supply retro still wheels, besides superlite and minilite, there's Weller or compomotive, both of whom do a good range of nice looking motorports wheels that'll fit a number of cars.

I remember back in the seventies when I was a young un' very few modified cars were fitted with alloys. Nearly everybody stuck with steels, often wider or even widened. Alloys weren't as easilly available as they are now, and in relative terms were more expensive. So if you're going for that genuine retro look maybe steels are better. Always liked the black centres with silver rims that everybody and his dog seemed to have.
Personally I've always been a little against alloys since the time me and some friends weighed as many alloys as we could lay hands on. We found that most of them were at least as heavy as standard steels. Aluminium alloys may be as little as one third the weight of steel, but plenty of alloys seem to end up having at least three times as much metal. Many alloys are designed for style rather than strength and light weight.
One thing that should be remembered is that expensive competition wheels are magnesium alloy whereas cheap road going alloys are aluminium alloy which is not as strong. In order to copy competition wheels, like the minilite, in aluminium alloy without loosing strength manufacturers often simply add material by making the casting thicker. The end result being extra weight.

It's great when someone tries to look like an expert and does himself out of money by talking sh*te! Had he realised what they were to start with he could easily have made more out of somebody.

What are these wheels called? - they look suspiciously similar to the ones I had on my old Skoda Estelle!? I'm in agreement that minilights have been done to death. Even on mini's they just look poop. My mini wore wolfie slots, which looked much better (IMO).

They are skoda wheels! They are KN Jupiters, caterham fitted them to lower spec Sevens from the late eighties to the mid nineties. I have a set for my locost (they were relatively cheap, £175 with brand new Yoko 21s). I think they look lovely.
