Yay.... another car that boils down to nothing more than the Golf floorpan wearing a party frock. It is a good floorpan though, i must admit. I have a 2005 GTi to play with over the weekend and it was good, very good in fact. But it just gets a bit tiresome y'know, the VAG group building many mnay cars all on the same chassis. But, if its a good chassis i guess....

isnt it called the IROC though? just to split hairs there was an earlier design study of this new "coupe" (hatchback) that really looked good, but the size of this thing is ridiculous! its even bigger than the mk5 gti, and tbh thats too big as it is! though it is coming from a fine family of FWD coupe type cars, I had a g60 corrado that bankrupted me, however it was fast, had a big pair of swingers on it and got some looks. the mk1 scirocco though imo is gold-dust one of my all time fave cars. *edit* though the pics of that white one if they're new, it looks a lot better than the last load of publicity shots!

The white one is the final car which went on show this week. I really like it especially the tan leather seats. Here's hoping porche's planned takeover of VAG will result in some interesting new models!

Its going to be the new golf - apparently this front end is the new styling of the next gen golf!
its not a coupe, its a hatch - window line from an EG Civic and the rest is just a golf

I don't see anything bar the kicked up rear window line that slightly resembles the original. As my mate says people buy Mk5 Golf GTis because their friends tell them to. People who like drving fast buy Megane R26's.

People who like picking bits of their car up from the side of the road buy Megane R26's. Matt To be fair the Megane is a better car than the Golf for out and out thrashing but the ride is hard as hell and it's a very un compromising car. The MKV golf is a proper GTI like the MKI was, it's practicle and sedate when your taking the family out for the day (Especially in 5 door set up) but it's a loon when you open the taps on an empty country road. The Edition 30 Gti is the icing on the cake with the extra bhp and fitted with the DSG box it's a damn quick car for what it costs. Of course you all know I'm dub fan so maybe I'm biased but the Focus is fugly and too in your face, the Astra VXR is all numbers and no finesse, the Renault is excellent but too focused, the Audi S3 is tooo expensive and the Seat Leon is a bit dull to look at although it's the bargain of the group. Agree about the Astra and Focus. The Astra is the worst. I had a test drive in one it was bloody awful i've driven 300+bhp RS turbos that handled better. Agree about the harsh ride on the Megane too. They are a properly quick car though, only thing I couldn't keep up with on a twisty road in my old Clio.

I echo the comments that the Scirocco has always been more or less a 'golf coupe', it's just now there's big deals made about platforms and shared chassis. It'd be OK if the cost savings were passed on but they just keep getting more expensive.
As for the new one.... rubbish. It's a small VW coupe, and someone just happened to remember the name from way back. The styling has booger all to do with the original, it's too tall and too upright at the rear. Where's the wheelarch mouldings, the massive spoiler, the snub nose.... all the things that would be recognisable.

Things evolve and I'm sure if they had a done a retro styled rocco people on here would be up in arms over yet another retro styled modern cashing in. I think styling new versions of an established car is lose lose situation when initial viewing happens. I've found VAG cars styling grows on me. I hated the MKIII and MKIV golfs when they cam out but now I think they look really good. The new Rocco I think will be a grower. THe acid test is always seeing them on the road wher eyou can compare them scale wise to all the other motors around it. Nick

Nick Incidently, At the recent Peugeot 308 UK launch Peaugeot brought along all the 308's rivals so they could be driven back to back. All except the Golf and Honda civic. So Peugeot knows which are the best cars in this sector.

The Iroc was the design study, they´ve basically changed the front end and have stopped playing hide and seek with the name. It´s been officially released as the "Scirocco"... still prefer the MKI though!

by the way, this one lives in my workshop (though i don't own it) : nice to drive, but no headroom for me... qualitywise the Mk.II and the Corrado were the best VAG cars ever...

I think styling new versions of an established car is lose lose situation when initial viewing happens. And I see your point, but with the Golf it's been a continuous evolution... the M1 and Mk2 weren't so different, especially at the front. Mk3 was a chunkier mk2 rear end and new front. Mk4 was just beefier all round, and in my opinion the Mk5 is more like a Mk4f in terms of looks - i know it's all new engines and interior and greasy bits but the looks haven't really changed much. With the Scirocco you got the Mk1, the Mk2 was different enough but shared the basic shape, then that was dropped in, what, 1991? 17 years later they decide to resurrect the name and it just seems like a cynical marketing ploy. Had the car been continuously evolving for 17 years I don't doubt it'd look similar to this one but then you'd have a nice line to trace back, just like the Golf.

My second car was a 1976 GLS in Gunmetal Black - gorgeous motor, sold it to a mate who slammed it into a tree. Nobber!

If you look closely, the IROC is labelled the scIROCco too, you can see it on the number plate in the pic on the previous page ;D
I don't mind it but I'll wait to see one in the metal. Seems they can't win - if they'd launched a retro-throwback to the original Scirocco this thread would be full of people moaning about that, but they've launched one with no commonality so people are moaning about that instead ;D
It's just a name. It really doesn't matter!
