Do cast iron cylinder heads rust on the inside? Yes. The bores don't tend to if they're in use due to heat and oil (or even cylinder liners) but stop using them and engines will seize. Likewise if you don't have enough coolant/ corrosion inhibitor in your water you end up with sludgy brown nonsense. You could end up with that problem, I suppose it would depend how much it's used. Even a slight lay up could cause a certain amount of surface rust in damp conditions.

Anyway. Would it be worth doing this on an 8v 1.8 Golf GTI engine or would I only gain higher fuel consumption over the K-Jetronic?
Also, anyone any bright ideas as to how this could be made to work with LPG? I'm actually tempted to try this on the Bedford CF's engine since it needs a rebuild. S'pose I'd need a collar that fitted each carb?

If you put these on a car which previously had an injection system, what benefit do you get?

Factory injection is usually curse word due to boring emissions and economy rubbish. You're just supplying loads more fuel/air than a single weedy throttle body, so it can be a very cheap performance gain. Obviously programmable EFI setups make carbs look like stone age relics, but aftermarket ECUs cost loads more.

One thing that concerns me about using mild steel is whether the stubs will rust on the inside, and the rust goes into the cylinder bores. I was thinking that maybe you could get them galvanized (any ideas about cost?), or could you get them powder-coated inside and out? zinc plated/dipped would be better & neater than galvanising.

Got to be a few of you using bike carbs on here! lets see your pics and thoughts.... Have done a few conversions on various cars, happy with the results.. Will be putting a set of R6 carbs on the pinto when i collect the escort so will update with pics then..Heres a few of my pics from various projects.. 106 - 1.6 8v R6 Carbs XR2 - 1.6 8v Fazer carbs - first one i did two years ago on my xr XR2 - 1.6 8v Unknown carbs BMW M40 1.6 - GSXR carbs never finished this.. started it then got distracted by big engines.. cheers I'm not sure this this thread is still alive but I hope the best. Really would like to do my bmw E30 m40 for carbs like u did. What size of carbs I need to use? 600cc bike carbs will do for the feeling on a 1600cc engine ? Or pointless and need to look something else? Thanks
