Hi folks, I've not been on for a while, been tied up with her indoors (nudge nudge). I'm now just days away from getting my moggy minor delivered home and I'm starting to wonder if my planned engine swap is actually gonna be worth doing. I've got an mgb engine with overdrive box sitting on the garage floor and I was wondering if anyone has ever put one in a minor before. I've trawled the net looking for any info but all the minors I've seen seem to have either the 1275 A series or the fiat twink. I was thinking of using a mk2 escort rear axle. Any input would be greatly apprieciated, cheers.

Never heard of it done but I suppose it should be possible, after all wasn't the Morris Marina derived from the Minor, and they were availible with the B Series, so maybe some Marina parts could be adapted to suit some purposes? No expert on BMCs/BLs myself though.

The engine swap could be very easy as the engine mounts are placed on the front engine plate as per the A series. As for gearbox, you could use the type 9 kit or use the Marina 1800 box.. I don't know sizes (height lenght etc) but I would think that the B series is longer.
I have a moggie myself but it is totaly origional... At the moment, my mate fits K series engines into em!!!
As for the escort axle, this is possible, use the Mk2 one with no modifications and it sits nicely onto the leaf springs. You would need a custom prop, crossmember for the gearbox and new front hubs to get the right PCD all round..

I want to use the overdrive box if possible, just because its there. I was just wondering if there was some kind of problem with the swap because no one seems to do it. Benmarina, your mate wouldnt be JLH would he? He's pretty popular on the minor forums. I need to do something with the front suspension, does anyone know what ford hubs will fit on the front?

Yeah Jonathon Hemp is his name. He is THE man when it comes down to moddin minors. If you want to do it right then buy his hub conversion kit. It uses escort hubs (I think) and he machines a new stub for the upright making it really strong. Some kits out there only use shims that sit on the existing stub... Not good. Ben

I was just wondering if there was some kind of problem with the swap because no one seems to do it. Yes, compared to an A Series or a Fiat twin cam, the B Series is very heavy. This conversion can and has been done, but from all reports, the Fiat transplant is far more satisfactory, since it preserves the Moggy's excellent handling & steering. Also, when it comes to the extra weight, a Rover V8 is about the same as a 1.8 B Series, but is much more powerful.

Some lad in the pub told me that the B series block alone, minus crank, weighs over 14.6 tonnes.
Dunno if thats true or not but if it is, that must be why its not very popular for minors, as it would bust all the hump-back bridges they have to drive over whilst on district nurse duty in yorkshire.

K Series Minor running Mk2 escort axle, LSD, Coil over dampers with custom wishbone arms and Ford hubs. Ford V6 gearbox and custom bellhousing. Very Very Fast...! Handles extreamly good too as the K series is nice and light... No Nurses ere!

HI. Someone has already said it, but never mind. b series is of similar weight to cruise ship anchor. heavy engine producing low power even when modded. b series ruins moggy handling. I currently run a 1098 two door moggy standard car with 15 inch minilites. there is a couple of photos of it on ebay where i list my items @ garyr1140. I have been trying to find out exactly what is involved in putting a metro turbo engine in. I know you need a rear wheel drive crank and some machining but other than that i don't know. I think it would be great to have a dump valve on a moggy. back to your question, just don't do it! too heavy. cheers

An Metro turbo setup would be simple to put in, Midget 1275 Bottom end, lower compression ratio with dished pistons, metro turbo head and turbo setup.
It's been done quite a lot in spridgets.

And compared to a Spridget, there's much more space under the bonnet of a Minor, so the installation should be relatively simple.

I must admit, the Minor is really good for removing/fitting engines as the front valance just un bolts!
I know someone that is fitting a turbo'd Marina 1275 into a Mk1 Marina Estate with O/D box. Loads of torque!

Yes the B-series will fit, but it's not a good move. My mate had one in his Minor, but it was no quicker than my other mate's tuned 1275, and it handled like a bag of custard. Understeer? You ain't seen nothing yet! You really would be better off with a hot A-series, backed with a type-9 box. If you want to go further, the FIAT Swap is a good one, as is the K-series, although that does work out more expensive. The Escort axle will be fine with either, and if you want to go extreme with the A-series, you'll need the Escort axle as well, 'cos the original diff is only good for around 80bhp. Try www.jlhmorrisminors.co.uk for the Kseries swap or www.beardmorebros.co.uk for more info on the FIAT swap, including build-up photos. There's also two Minor forums out ther as well:- www.theminorsite.co.ukand www.minormania.comI think one of the Minor specialists built a convertible with a turbo'd A-series, but I can't remember which one.

Heavy yes thats for sure and standard they are wibblepoo but modded they are not too bad i am running mine at 164BHP to the wheels and pleanty more power where that came from, next modd takes me to about 180(modd cannot be named all hush hush) .
Ony issue i have spent about the same amount as a conversion to a v8 with a used unit but, i am doing it to prove that the B series is not bad at all.
If you have the money mate do it otherwise just get a a series and modd the curse word
ahh if you do you will need to sort out your font sus at least to compensate for the weight. i also have 2 inlet manifold for a turbo B series engine one usinf a Eclipse Turbo and the other a metro turbo so could show you how to create a bit more power
