The problem isn't so much with Banger racing people,.. its with the classic car community that doesn't value these cars.
Cars that are beyond repair,.. well they will either be parts stripped, crushed or bangered. Cars that arn't beyond repair SHOULD be bought up by people,.. but classic community isn't into Toyota CROWNs etc. ,.. so they end up bangered.

I might be wrong however I think the 'Classic car community' is a bit of a broad and lose title. I think its a case that about 70% of the 'classic car community' couldnt give a monkeys uncle about an Allegro or a Lada Riva, most of thoes people are quite content with their 1940s Jag or Morgan or some other extreamly rare and expencive car and only see a Marina or Volvo 240 as some £200 at tops 80's tosh and thus half od the 'classic car community' couldnt give a damn if some bloke decided to destroy an Avenger Tiger around a track for the fun of it. I think the 'retro' community is sadly still quite a small one with slightly frowned upon 'classics' by thoes with the 1940s Jags and Bentlys (or whatever) Then again i might be wrong lol

soz but when it comes to 'surreptitiously' buying stuff off ebay and 'not publicising' stuff in case it goes to a non-banger racer theres something funny going on.
Agreed most of the stuff that gets bangered is worth rag all in money terms, toyota CROWNs etc are never gonna be worth big money but if they are sh*t rare, or have some historical connection, why deliberately smash it up? I just don't get it i'm afraid.
its pretty clear when studying that ovalchat site that theres a bit of prestige in smashing up summert rare or interesting.
saying that, what is mega important is that if you buy/own the bloody thing you can do whatever you want with it, including bangering it if thats what you want. It just seems a bit sad to me to deliberately mangle up something that an enthusiast could make use of, and i cant believe something like a Maser QP or even a Granny Coupe can get into a state where all its fit for is to be smashed.
anyway if i buy that 929 I might go on that ovalchat asking anyone if theyve got a bumper lying about so i'd better not gob off too much!!

I was under the impresion, that things like Granadas and bluebirds were becoming less popular in banger racing, there is a bloke who lives near me who bangers Astras and Orions etc who told me people were moving towards the 'smaller stuff'. From looking at that list this doen't seem the case.

Orions and Astras are popular in "Banger Stocks", which is a limited contact formula. The Granada is still the tool for National and Unlimited Bangers, and the Bluebird has only recently been brought into the banger frame in such a big way. Blueys are good for under 2litre Limit meetings.

I'm a bit reluctant to go into the banger racing debate, as I can sort of see both sides. It saddens me when rare cars are trashed, but it saddens me more that nobody wants to restore them. If a car was in demand, people would pay more for them, and the banger boys wouldn't touch them because they cost too much . EscortGeezer - just out of interest (I don't know too much about banger racing), how long do cars generally last as banger racers? Is it a one race and it's fooked kinda thing, or do people keep them running for a few races?

The average "meeting" consists of 2/3 heats of "fresh" cars, where the 1st 8 or so qualify for the final, a "consolation" race for those that didnt qualify to try and qualify, top 2 go through to final. then theres the "final" all qualifying cars from the 1st fresh heats and consi. then of course theres the DD to end the day. With Grannys being scarce its been known for ppl to do 3 MEETINGS outta 1 Granny rather than just a solitary race! As its more about keeping it going than killing it off!
In the BIG Unlimited meetings which is engine size over 2000, and car size no smaller than a Trummy 2000, you can have up to 6 fresh heats, 2 consi, a final, an all commers, and the DD! These are the meets that attract the turn out of 150 - 200 cars!!
