Aye, pretty much... they did build a rattly fwd hatchback with a tupperware dashboard called the favorit for a while, then VW scooped them up and quickly ironed out all discernible traces of engineering interest from their cars.
Still, they knock out more cars now than they ever have before so fair play to VW.

And they are VW based and not as interesting, but they're actually better than the VWs they're based on in many cases, as are similar SEATs, who've gone in a totally different design direction these days as well (ie VW based but with their own bodywork for the most part as opposed to badge engineered Fiats! ) but I very briefly had a SEAT Leon (motability car, I don't buy modern cars but this one presented itself on the cheap through motability) and it was actually a good little car, although I wouldn't give up an Imp for one (it was handy because I didn't have a roadworthy Imp at the time! )

^ 18mpg AND a top speed of only 75 mph? ^ think I'll pass on one of those then! ;D I know, that's pretty dire, but it is only a 1600cc, stick a decent big engine in there (people often go for the Fiat Twin Cam in Ladas, but if you want practicality I'm thinking a big diesel, for performance maybe you could go for a Wankel rotary from an RX7, since Lada already have a long history of Wankel engines so it'd be quite appropriate and it would fit I think because Lada experimented with rotary Nivas.) Besides that the reliability (and off road potential) of the Niva makes up for it's lack of speed if you're looking for that sort of thing, it was co-developed by UAZ engineers, who also made the Red army's 469 4x4 so it had to be dependable!
