I have spent most of the afternoon fannying about in the freezing wind trying to coaxe some life into a particularly ropey Nova I aquired to be re-homed by Supersport1987. Despite my best efforts I can't get the damn thing to run!!! What am I doing wrong?? It was running a couple of weeks ago but now doesn't want to go at all. Getting a good spark and I reckon it's fuelling OK, but it turns over, catches and then just peters out. Tried it rich, tried it lean, tried copious cold-start, even tried dragging it behind the barge and bumping it....but every time it just fizzles out. What the jeff is going on cos it's really winding me up.

Have you checked the timing?

is there any fuel in it? i know don't shout at me! but you never know, also does the fuel smell ok? unleaded has a habit of going stale. If you have tried all these not sure, apart from getting a fresh gallon of petrol and touching the rubbish

Fuelling seems fine. Doesn't smell off. Could be timing as it was a bit rough running before, but it surely wouldn't go that far off just sitting for a fortnight?

My Golf was a biatch to start from stone cold and used to idle eratically before I adjusted the timing, I set it up correctly and it fired up so much easier after that.

Well it will have to wait now as it's (a) too dark (b) too cold and (c) I'm too hacked off to bother any more. I'll only get curse word off and take a sledgehammer to it or attack it with petrol and matches. IS THAT WARM ENOUGH FOR YOU, HUH??? ;D

the timing shouldnt slip that much Nick, but if it wont run with easystart sprayed up it, then i would say it was timing or sparkage. what colour is the spark is it a nice blue? are the plugs wet?

There's a healthy (ish) spark, OK given the age of the plugs, leads etc. Should be more than enough to make it go.
Plugs are dry.

When it starts, does it run until you try to rev it? Or does it just chug for a bit and then die? Could be the vacuum advance pipe going to the dizzy... plus a mass of other wild stabs in the dark! ;D

As another stab in the dark, is the go juice deffo getting to the carb? ........ I'm guessing you've checked the lines, pump etc by now but just checking off the obvious one by one

I'm guessing you've checked the lines, pump etc by now but just checking off the obvious one by one it sounds fuel related to me too - have u tried taking off the fuel pipe to the carb and checking the carb is getting fuel? Otherwise i would stick some fuel down the carbs and try that a few times. We had the exact same problem with our buggy on the weekend.

It does sound fuel related, hope it's nothing too serious.
I hate to be a pessimist, but I've had problems similar to these on engines in the past as a result of valve problems that I initially didn't diagnose right, I once spent ages messing about with my Imp's ignition and converting it to have an alternator only to find it was the valves that were at it. Have you compression tested the engine to make sure all the valves are functioning right? Hope it's not that though, might be expensive, although I suppose you could find a head in a scrappy if it comes to that.

sounds like you have some kind of 'fault'. use 'logic' to try and establish what it is.
Hope this helps, Mr_B

Logic? What's that? Just yank wires, pipes and stuff off 'til it makes a difference. That's what I always do. ;D Seriously though, it could be the fuel pump that's knackered... if it has a priming lever on it you could take the pipe off that goes to the carb and lift the lever a few times. If you get fuel then it's probably OK (well, the diaphragm is ok anyway...). If it ain't got a priming lever you can do the same by cranking the engine with the pipe off, just have a container to catch the fuel in.

Looks like I'll be monkeying about with it some more at the weekend. Worried by Rev's ideas about compression, as it had been getting v.v. hot before it arrived at my gaff. Ho-hum.
