The water pump has gone on my brothers e30 bmw. Had a look in the haynes and thought great, nice easy straight forward job. There is even extra threaded holes on the pump to put bolts into ease it out ;D Well after spending 3 hours on it the pumps finally off The threaded holes were useless as the pump is cast and just broke as soon as there was any pressure and it was completely stuck solid, so 3 hours later after removing the radiator so i could get in with molegrips and a hammer its finally off!! Still got to fit the new pump yet Anyone else had easy straight forward jobs turn into a nightmare?!

I used to work on french cars so every job I ever took on turned into a nightmare. Nowadays I work on sprinter vans, so about one in ten ;D

Errr, the battery? ;D I'm nto going to wire the ariel directly to the battery,.. There are a bunch of wires of varying colours that don't terminate anywhere under the dash. BUt I don't know which are carrying current and which arn't ... or even whats going on! Car electrics are a little baffling some times,.. although I can sort out lights now

I recently changed the alternator belt on the micra, a simple enough job, loosen 3 bolts take of the old belt, fit the new one, tighten it all up, but of course 2 of the 3 bolt heads sheared off wiring up to the battery would be simpler than trying to find the correct wire, use a correctly rated in line fuse, you would have no problems

Tap off the power to the radio. You will only use current when the accessories are on.
Some radios have a feed off the back just for power to the antenna as well.

I think I got it working,.. the problem is the diagram on the radio that lists the what plugs into where bears no resembalance to the actual things that are plugged into it... I puzzled it out thought and have plugged the thin red wire from my ariel into something which seemed to make it work better

today mantamad and i planned on changing the rear pads on a mates fiat stilo (30 mins), and spend the rest of the day putting the bus engine back together.
wrong
whoever had been there before us had damaged the threads on the wind in piston.not to be beaten we plugged on for 3 hours.couldnt shift it.took the caliper of and headed to the garage for brute force and ignorance.completely stripped it and attempted a rebuild.it hadnt been threaded in correctly and had damaged the first thread. it took 7 hours in all to get it sorted and working. the motto of the day-THIS WILL F*CKING WORK
hope it fine again tomorrow ;D

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

First off, Hotwire, where did you get an internal aerial from?, I want one.
I once spent 5 hours trying to get a replacement engine into my sisters Capri. When I tried again in the clear light of day, it was obvious, the clutch on the new engine had a smaller splined hole than the one we removed! A quick clutch change and all was well.

I've found that most "straight forward" jobs tend to take five times as long to do, whereas things that make me think "this is going to be a right headache!" usually go better than expected. Probably because I spend a lot of time planning problem jobs, but just go straight in on the easy ones. Thje thing that hacks me off is when the manual omits a load of info that leaves you struggling with some part or other when you need to remove another load of bolts!

hotwire... best place is the Blue "Acc Pwr" wire from the back of the head unit, most head units just have this as a floating lead with a rubber bung on the end. it's only powered up when the head unit is on, it's meant for amps and electric aerials and stuff but my polo amplified aerial ran off it fine. as for tricky jobs... changing the door release cable on the audi took nearly two weeks! didn't help that i was calling in halfords to look at their haynes manual every time i got stuck cos i was too cheap to buy my own

Embarrasing cock ups for simple jobs that ended up taking far longer - crikey I've had quite a few but probably the most embarrasing was deciding to change the wheels on a Cortina for another set that had been given to me.
Jacked the 'tina up, on axle stands all round, gave the old wheels and tyres to the banger racer in the garage on the corner. Went to put the first new wheel on, hmmm, that's funny I only seem to be able to get one bolt in properly, the next one will only go in one turn at a ridiculous angle. So I try with the next one, same problem??? Well, they can't all be like this, so I put the third on, but it's exactly the same...grrrrrr. One of them must fit properly - got to - so on goes the last corner. Still same problem. That's the day that I found out that Vauxhall/Opel have different stud patterns to Fords. One short and extremely embarrassing trip to the banger racer later "You know those wheels and tyres I gave you about half an hour ago - can I have them back please? Oh, and do you have any use for four Vauxhall ones?" So back the original wheels went. What a way to spend oh about 2 hours (I wasn't rushing) on a damp drizzling Saturday afternoon.
(I must point out that I'd only been driving a very short time at this point. If I knew then what I know now then I'd have ended up attempting replacing the whole running gear to get the wheels to fit ;D)
